Is that Anthony Weiner's old district? And if it is, how weird is this. Oh and God Damn it Dem's WTF?

2 lawhawk  Wed, Jun 13, 2012 7:25:24am

This is a newly created district (redistricting) that may include parts of several districts, including Weiner's old district. However, local Democrats aren't exactly thrilled about Barron's chances. In fact, a ton of money is being thrown at his opponent, Hakeem Jeffries. Jeffries has support of local politicians including Congressman Nadler, Ed Koch, Dov Hikind, and local papers have come out in opposition, including the Daily News. DC-37, former Congressman Ed Towns and the Amsterdam News have thrown their support to Barron.

The UFT is refusing to back either Jeffries or Barron.

Jeffries is getting backing from several law firms, firms representing charter schools (one of the reasons that DC 37 is backing Barron and UFT is sitting on the sidelines).

Considering that many of the residents in the new NY 8 are Jewish, Barron's potential primary win is a huge affront considering his anti-Jewish views (to say nothing of his other inanities that he regularly spews from the steps of City Hall as a Councilmember).

If Charles Barron somehow wins the seat, can the Dem House leadership block him from being seated?

Is anti Israel radical better or worse than Jew hater in this scale?

Either way, hanging around with the hate mongerer Cynthia McKinney validates his bona fides in both categories.

It's one thing to be blindly one-sided abut the Middle East. That in & of itself can't be said to always signal a Jew-hater. But this --

"Jews “only make up 20 percent of the population, but they’ve always walked these streets as if they owned them, and acted as if they are the only ones in the community that matter.”"

-- should be disgustingly obvious. Insert ANY OTHER group in there, & you'd have someone who would be hounded out of politics in a SECOND (&, of course, you also have the explanation for why so many are blindly one-sided about the Middle East. but that's a different discussion. Sort of.).

Yeah, he's a nut burger and a half but the Weekly Standard title is a load of bullshit...

N.Y. Democrats Poised to Nominate Former Black Panther, Anti-Israel Radical for Congress
The heart and soul of the Democratic party?

The heart and soul of the Democratic party? Seriously? What the fuck is that about?

To counter the Weekly Standard's slander of the Democratic Party:

Congressional Candidate Charles Barron Slammed
Charles Barron: not 'the heart and soul of the Democratic Party.'

While the Weekly Standard attempts to slander the Democratic Party by alluding that Charles Brown represents “The heart and soul of the Democratic party?” Democrats gather to oppose his candidacy.

And this here is exhibit A for an ongoing problem, how much old-fashioned anti-Semitism can be bundled with inaccurate criticism of the Gaza blockade, and still be classified as political opinion, rather than simple bigotry.

This guy's crap is nothing new; all that's unusual is his shouldering into mainstream politics with it. Glad he's seeing some pushback.

It's the WS being the right wing hacks they are and ignoring as has already been linked to that many in the NY Democratic party establishment have called him out.

re: #7 Gus

The wording made me twitch too, but since The Weekly Standard had another article saying essentially the same thing The Forward did, I decided to leave it alone (not really in the mood for a fight today).

11 HappyWarrior  Wed, Jun 13, 2012 10:35:19am

The articles using him as somehow being the heart and soul of the party ignore that this guy in fact has an opponent. And the WS wants us to completely ignore the racist nuts in their own movement.

Some experts are saying he has a chance to win. I hope they are wrong and he loses by a landslide.

The ADL has some history about him including a few quotes.

"They massacre the Palestinian people, bomb their homes, churches and schools, and then block anybody trying to deliver aid to them. What this amounts to is genocide."
- Interview with the Amsterdam News,
July 2, 2009 - July 8, 2009

"Gaza is a virtual death camp, the same kind of conditions the Nazis imposed on the Jews,"
- Interview with the Amsterdam News, July 23-29, 2009

"We are sick and tired of this country supporting dictators, supporting terrorists and then saying they have a homeland security office to stop terrorism. Well you want to stop terrorism? The biggest terrorist in the world is the government of Israel."

Yeah...I wondered about that subtitle too.

This is my Congressional district. It is pretty huge & oddly shaped due to redistricting. But it's also quite diverse. (It covers everything from Yuppie filled Park Slope, West Indian property owners in Flatbush & Canarsie, Orthodox Jews in Midwood, and OWS activists in Ditmas Park & hipsters/ black professionals who bought brownstones in Bed Stuy.)

Anyway, from what I've been seeing on the ground here, Jeffries is doing really well so far & Barron doesn't have a chance in hell of prevailing. Jeffries raised quite a bit of money, so he's been able to cover the neighborhood w/ signage. He has the backing of SEIU/1199 which does really great getting out the vote operations in this part of Brooklyn.

I don't know why Towns endorsed Barron, but I don't think it will really matter much. Towns was barely tolerated here and everyone who watches the local news knows that Barron is as crazy as a mad hatter. A couple members of my family (which is mostly comprised of middle-class African-American professionals) met Barron at an Obama rally in 2008 and let's just say ... we were all really creeped out by him. There is literally no way in hell that any of us would vote for him.

Further, I have no doubt that Jeffries will do quite well b/c he's an Obama-style African-American Dem with a picture perfect family. It also doesn't hurt that he's a local boy who grew up in East Flatbush, went to Midwood High School, attended SUNY Binghamton as an undergrad & got his JD from NYU. So there's something for everyone in the district to love. The key will be getting voters to turn out in an off schedule primary on a random Tuesday in late June.

That's good to know, thanks.
