So pathetic that they're tied to Norquist's whiny no tax hikes pledges. I understand being in principle as opposed to tax increases but signing a pledge? My god that's dumb. And honestly as much as I dislike social spending cuts, I'd hate the idea of a left wing version of Norquist doing the same. In a deficit, one shouldn't be signing a pledge to something that could help solve the problem.

The GOP has a soul left?

Nah. They sold it for a handful of magic beans at the turn of the century.

If you had told me about Norquist a few years ago, I would have accused you of stereotyping. The man is so cartoonish, it's horrifying.

If the GOP had a soul, Grover would win it easily. In fact, I think he already has. Nobody in the GOP is listening to Jeb Bush.

If Jeb Bush had run for president, he would have instantly disqualified himself with the GOP base by raising his hand when asked if he would accept a deal with $10 in budget cuts for every $1 in tax increases.

Well, Avalon is right to point out that Norquist is suffering defections, and that's a needful thing. The current budget battles do need to end and only a compromise will end them. The GOP is not going to win the Complete Victory needed for Republicans to have it all their own way on the budget (neither will the Democrats, BTW). That means a compromise will eventually be struck. Grover Norquist will either accede to this fact or he will be politically destroyed by it.

Watch the Biggest Explosion Ever Seen on the Moon
NASA scientists recorded the biggest explosion from a meteorite impact seen on the moon in eight years of monitoring. The lunar burst was caused by a 40-kilogram boulder-sized rock slamming into the surface at about 90,000 kph. It generated a flash 10 times brighter than anything seen before, which came from the thermal glow of molten rock at the point of impact. More: ...

Scientists Agree on Climate Change, Why Doesn’t the Public? : NPR
A new study confirms that the vast majority of scientists who research the climate accept that the planet is warming and human beings are largely responsible. Yet a large slice of the American public believes that scientists are deeply split about global warming. More: Scientists Agree on Climate Change, Why Doesn't the Public? : NPR

The Greatest (Movie) Speech Ever Made
73 years later is still relevant and powerful as ever. It's also because of this movie that Charlie Chaplin was labelled a "premature anti-fascist."

Your Weekly Peggy Noonan Three Martini Column
We are in the midst of the worst Washington scandal since Watergate. The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they're seeing. The Justice Department assault on the Associated Press and the ugly politicization of the Internal Revenue Service have left the administration's credibility deeply, ...

4 Things We Should Remember When Arguing About Politics
Political discourse in America has reached levels of douchebaggery previously only theorized about but never observed, like conversational dark matter. We're in a whole new world of hating people based solely on their opinions on a few key issues, and since this is unexplored territory, our conversations about politics are usually only a couple notches beyond the "hold your breath until the other ...

LAPD Reformed as Federal Oversight Lifted, City Leaders Say
Los Angeles leaders say the Los Angeles Police Department has undergone a dramatic transformation since federal oversight of the agency was ordered 12 years ago. The dismissal Wednesday of the so-called consent decree, which arose largely out of the Rampart corruption scandal and addressed basic problems of accountability that stretched back decades, delivered a largely symbolic, but nonetheless important milestone for the LAPD ...

What to do in Orange County - LA - San Diego
Seems a good way to solicit ideas for touristing destinations and activities. Will have 4-5 days so some opportunity for visiting multiple sites. And since I do have an interest in history and military history items in that area will be welcome suggestions. (The USS Midway down in San Diego is already on the list.) If there is anything California-geology related that would be ...
