"President Obama took it upon himself to pass the DREAM ACT and I hope that some of these kids and their families can come back to Alabama now. We need more paths to citizenship for people who are not criminals."
Very much agree.

‘The whites lasted half a day, and the blacks wouldn’t come at all. The work was just too hot and hard for them,’ Smith said. He dismissed the argument, often made by critics of illegal immigration, that Americans might do the work if offered a higher and hourly wage.

Is anyone surprised that african americans don't want to do farm work for for white alabamians? Does this really need to be spelled out? After slavery and sharecropping, how can any honky still have the brass balls to ask for more?

Isn't there a story in Blue Nile about how the whites in Africa used to bemoan how the black natives would mostly do as seemingly little work as they could during the bulk of the day, calling them lazy good-for-nothings, amongst the tamer epithets? And then, one day, for some reason, the white folks actually had to do some bit of manual labor in the afternoon, and they were all nearly dead after half-an-hour of sun and humidity? Not only do black folks not want to pick tomatoes for some white farmer at 2 bucks a box, the ones who were physically able to do that work don't live as sharecroppers anymore, and don't WANT to live as sharecroppers.

This is work that would likely be automated if not for the fact that the slave-wage labor is cheaper.

re: #5 John Vreeland

Automating fruit picking a surprisingly difficult task. You need lots of processing to recognize a ripe tomato and figure out how you're going to reach for it, and you need lots of sensors to figure out how hard your pressing on it when you pick it, and you chassis needs to fit in a relatively small space (less than 2 ft wide) and be able to travel a large distance on it's own power.

If there's any manual job which resists automation, picking fruit is it.

It's gonna be really hard for AL politicians to shake-off the racist moniker when they won't even accept these folks when they ARE legal.

The U.S. Justice Department has challenged some parts of the law, and President Obama’s announcement Friday of a temporary legal amnesty for more than 1 million young undocumented immigrants nationwide clashes directly with Alabama’s legislation.

All our activities will be for naught if the president grants amnesty to everyone,” state Sen. Scott Beason, the chief sponsor of the Alabama law, said Friday.
