EXCELLENT!!!!

A nice visual, but there are some problems:

1. Sometimes it IS appropriate to appeal to authority. I suppose Fox News will say that appeal to the scientific community would involve a fallacy.

2. Attacking the character of a person does not have to lead to fallacy. Sometimes it is entirely appropriate. Why should I have to “engage” with the “argument” of a Holocaust denier?

3. I’m not sure that the person making the argument ALWAYS has the burden of proof. Seems to depend on the case at hand.

re: #2 philosophus invidius

1: The problem is that if a claimed authority is not accepted by both sides, then the argument is incomplete and no different from one side simply saying “I am the authority”. Granted, this is common and leads to pointless discussion (EG bible/creationism etc.), but it is still true.

2: You answer yourself. You can avoid the argument and simply call someone an ass, but you are then not arguing the case. Thinking that calling someone an ass is an argument is a fallacy, regardless of how satisfying it may feel.

3: By definition an argument is a disagreement based on some levels of proof (or assumption) held by both sides. If one side says their proof is better than the other’s (IE their claim is true) then they should be required to elaborate that to a deeper level of proof. Certainly you can argue that both sides need to be able to prove their position, but in reality it is the one who chooses to make the case who has to go first.
