Politics, religion and archaeology.

A fine mix.

If they have not already done so, expect the PA to shortly give the mikveh an Arabic and/or Muslim name and claim that it is a holy Muslim site, despite its pre-dating the advent of Islam by half a millennium. All part of the century-long effort by the Arab leadership to attempt to wipe out the documented history of Jewish ties to their ancient homeland by coopting Jewish sites and claimign it as their own.

The purpose of archaeology, in theory at least, is to uncover facts. It is only when the scientific inquiry is subjugated to political expediency that the mix becomes volatile.

For many years the Fatah antiquities group would just destroy the evidence.

When did they stop?

That's true. They remain in the business of breaking things.

And glorifying those who do. It doesn't help matters when their enablers at the UN and its organs such as UNICEF encorage their irresponsible behavior.

re: #3 sliv_the_eli

The problem is the conflation of archaeology with politics and religion.

A science is polluted with agendas.

That is the point.

re: #9 researchok

I don't think we disagree on the point. Although arguably science is rarely able to divorce itself from political agendas, mixing the two in a region like the Middle East makes for an even more volatile mix.

Israel should not let them do that. The artifacts should be recovered and removed to safety, by force if needed.

Yes, it is. But as we have so often noted here; The Palestinians have the right to their own opinions, they do not have the right to their own facts.

The Palestinian propaganda machine will naturally treat any recovery effort as an attack of the Al-Aqsa mosque. Given that certainty, it would be a good idea for the Israelis to ensure that the entire recovery effort is observed by Muslims both from Israel and from other countries (perhaps Bosnia or Bangladesh). That won't blunt the attack in the Arab world, but it would have some effect on the attack in Europe and India and in North America it would likely neutralize the attack for everyone who is reachable.

The problem is, this wouldn't be a one-time lightning raid to get a few objects, it's a matter of lifetimes of careful archaelogical exploration. I do like the idea of bringing in outside scientists or observers, but it would still be an enormously complex and problematic undertaking.

I'd love to see something happen, though.
