Good. A one-year suspension from school is pretty heavy-duty. The progression of their lives just changed permanently. Their friends will move on; they will not.

I read somewhere today that the father of one of these boys met with this lady. I really wonder why the boy wasn't required to meet with her and apologize in person. Really. THAT would have been a lesson to remember. Getting out of it because you're embarrassed or whatever and having your parent do it for you? This kid just learned that Mom and Dad will fix everything, no matter how he acts. The kid should be required to meet this lady face-to-face and verbally give her a sincere apology.

Good! Little jerks need to learn manners and how to behave in polite society.

I agree with community service and an in-person apology. In fact, I would double the community service. Suspending them from school for an entire year however is completely wrong and counter-productive.

Hopefully they have learned their lesson. Who knows, they may even go on to do good in the future. Knowing now how hurtful words can be.

No idea what went on, as I obviously wasn't there. Had I been the father, quite apart from being infuriated with the kid, I would have been mortified personally, as my child's behavior is to a degree a reflection on me. I would want to meet with her for that reason.

Also, I think that when you as a normal person apologize to someone for having wronged them, you disburden yourself of a degree of guilt. I kind of like the idea that the stupid kid will not be able to experience that relief right away, if ever. Maybe as he matures, he'll come to truly understand what an awful little shit he was, and that he was never able to do anything himself to rectify it at all. That terrible realization will itself be the lesson.

Then again, that's all contingent upon the kid(s) ceasing to be little assholes at some point. 50/50 at best.

From the article:

The families of all four boys waived their right to a hearing and agreed to the one-year suspensions. During that year, the boys will be educated at the district's Reengagement Center, described as an "alternative education program [that] keeps middle school students on track academically while providing a structured opportunity for students to take responsibility for their actions."

So those boys will still be able to learn and get ready to go to high school, but they can forget about getting into any selective high schools for their freshman year.

It remains a very stiff sentence, but a wise one. Damaging but not ruining the lives of the offenders makes clear that being rotten as they were has permanent consequences. A heavy penalty was needed pour encourager les autres.

I think you need to check up on these "alternative middle schools" and what kind of education they provide. They are more or less juvenile camp or "Juvie."
