Plenty of Job Openings for U.S. Vets … in Canada
Forget about fleeing to Canada to avoid the draft or the latest perceived government intrusion on personal liberty. Canadian officials are hoping to lure U.S. veterans across the border with jobs.
Officials at VetJobs.com - an employment site partially owned by the Veterans of Foreign Wars - said that the Edmonton Economic Development Corporation is opening thousands of pipeline jobs to U.S. veterans willing to travel or relocate up north.
“Unlike most of North America, we have more jobs than we have workers to fill them,” the group’s hiring announcement boasts. Ted Daywalt, CEO of VetJobs.com, said Edmonton officials anticipate a shortage of 114,000 workers in the Alberta area. They’re targeting U.S. veterans, he said, because they already possess skills like welding, iron working and maintaining power plants from their active-duty days.
He said pay for the work can be up to 30 percent more than similar jobs found within the U.S.
The pipeline sits roughly 500 miles north of the Canada’s border with Montana. Daywalt said some jobs will be temporary or seasonal positions, while other would-be hires will be offered packages to relocate to the region.
