And just when you think he can't sink lower, Jim Hoft does it again.

Health care costs can bankrupt someone, even if they have insurance. A close friend was diagnosed with cancer and their family is on the brink because of all the added costs - copays, treatments, etc. It's far worse for those who have no insurance at all.

Creating a mechanism to allow people to buy into an insurance plan via the exchange opens up insurance to more people - and can help more people with most kinds of ailments.

No system is perfect, especially with certain kinds of ailments - where the treatment costs can rise exponentially. That includes some kinds of cancer treatments where a medication dose is in the thousands of dollars. For someone with no insurance, they'd have to go into debt or forgo the treatment altogether, or if they have insurance, they would have potentially run into their lifetime limits (that the PPACA has since eliminated).

It's a good thing for him he never leaves his mother's basement.

I just lost my dad to pancreatic cancer two months ago. I can't imagine what it would have been like without not just medicare, but the supplemental insurance my mother got through her retirement (worked for State of New York). They even had long term home health care insurance and still had to pay 3 months before that would kick in. They had all the insurance and it still cost them tens of thousands. A poor person doesn't stand a chance.

re: #4 leftynyc

First, let me say how sorry I am for your loss. My mom died of pancreatic cancer 30 years ago. It was ugly. Very ugly. Thankfully, insurance hadn't collapsed back then do my dad didn't have to go bankrupt for the four years my mom was either in a hospital or nursing home.

Unfortunately, an average person barely stands a chance, either.

Today that would have been completely different.

Your parents had various insurance help (supplemental, LTC) where few do (perhaps through AARP, not sure how that works). An average person having worked at an average company doesn't get benefits once they're no longer there. (Which is why this whole GOP turning one set of workers against the other is do infuriating. Why race to the bottom? Why not race to the top? Anyway, that's a rant for another day.)

There's no ER that handles cancer treatments (another GOP talking point). The cost of insurance before getting one iota of care is itself prohibitive. Getting care when you're really sick and unable to work? Good luck once you no longer have insurance.

The whole discussion surrounding healthcare is so infuriatingly frustrating because it's all lies and bullshit. Just this morning a GOP guy was on tv espousing the wondrous healthcare system we have saying that everyone can get care for anything. Worse yet, the talking head bimbo let that go.

How do you even have a conversation under the weight of the lies...mostly fear inducing lies? You can't. And for that, we're fucked.

I used to have respect for conservative values (I still do, except now they are democratic values). When the crazies took over, there's nothing left to respect about the GOP. At all.

re: #5 Joanne (JustJay)

So sorry about your mother. Losing a parent is like nothing else I've ever experienced (51 years old). Dad is the one who taught me why Democrats are better and we talked alot about the health care debate in his last months. He would have loved seeing the law upheld. But every single day he shook his head about what it must be like for people without disposable income to have a health crisis. It'll bankrupt anyone...and all we hear is how it's the greatest health care in the world.

re: #7 leftynyc

Thank you. I was 22 when I lost my mom. They allowed her to leave the hospital for one day to attend my wedding. She died about a year later. The entire last year of her life she never left the hospital or nursing home (which used to do hospice care).

There's no good age to lose a parent. Now, the resulting insurance debacle is enough to lose the remaining parent due to the stress of it all, I can't fathom the insurance hassle when you are dealing with a sick or dying loved one.

When did "conservatives" become heartless sociopaths who cheer for dying people and against gay soldiers? I don't recognize our politics any longer. I wonder if it was always that way (I remember Reagan talking about Medicare being the greatest evil before it was implemented, and there has always been a GOP issue with SocSec...but never openly cheering on the death of old or poor people). Perhaps is always was there and I just missed it. SocSec and Medicare used to be something both parties wouldn't advocate ending. Now, well, we see what's changed there.

Maybe I just need to remove these rose colored glasses and recognize that there has always been hate and loathing against those weaker than most.

We are in the midst of the worst Washington scandal since Watergate. The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they're seeing. 4 Things We Should Remember When Arguing About Politics
Political discourse in America has reached levels of douchebaggery previously only theorized about but never observed, like conversational dark matter. We're in a whole new world of hating people based solely on their opinions on a few key issues, and since this is unexplored territory, our conversations about politics are usually only a couple notches beyond the "hold your breath until the other ...

LAPD Reformed as Federal Oversight Lifted, City Leaders Say
Los Angeles leaders say the Los Angeles Police Department has undergone a dramatic transformation since federal oversight of the agency was ordered 12 years ago. The dismissal Wednesday of the so-called consent decree, which arose largely out of the Rampart corruption scandal and addressed basic problems of accountability that stretched back decades, delivered a largely symbolic, but nonetheless important milestone for the LAPD ...
