Haven't even listened to that particular clip, but if it's the Made in Japan version, Gillan goes stratospheric. When his lungs hadn't been destroyed from smoking, he was quite possibly the finest singer in rock and roll--even better than Plant, who was no slouch.

Smoke on the Water, absolutely the first song played by every 16 year old in a garage band in the 70s.

So sad to watch a legend pass. May he always be remembered.

In the last few weeks I've been listening to a lot of RItchie Blackmore music. I don't why. I have a bunch of Deep Purple stuff in my Itunes but I had been skipping over it until recently. They had a unique dynamic. While Blackkmore was the star, everybody was a key contributor. A big portion of "Wring that Neck", which you would think is a total guitar solo is actually an organ solo. On some of Purple's biggest songs, "Lazy", "Highway Star", "Burn" and "Child in Time", the keyboard solo is just as big as the guitar.
Come to think of it, I don't remember hearing Jon Lord ever play the piano.
