It's good to see them moving so quickly to try to address the problem, but it's sad that it takes something so extreme for governments to realize how desperate the situations of some of their citizens are.

How scary that another person tried to do the same thing today. Kudos to the guard who tackled him and prevented it—that took no small amount of courage considering that, had his timing had been off even by a split second, he could've gone up in flames with the guy he was trying to save. *shudder*

Hopefully, the existence of this new team will head off any further attempts.

It is unfortunate, and fortunate, like you said. Israeli society has developed through a series of improvisations, reacting to fortunate events and unfortunate events. There is a problem now, and this was even talked about on our visit to Israel. Israel will have to make a modification, and I suspect they will. But this is a pretty difficult problem. That's why they set up a network between the protesters and the government--because a good idea can come from anywhere.

That may very well be, but beyond knowing how to manage my personal finances from month to month, I understand very little about economics and how various economic & market systems work on a national or global level.

IOW I don't feel qualified to comment on that other than to say that it seems obvious (to me) that whatever system is in place needs to have SOME sort of regulation to prevent it becoming completely unethical and/or inhumane.

There is clearly a problem in Israel that needs to be addressed. It's equally clear that Israel cannot simply restructure its entire system overnight, even if it wanted to. The government has taken a step in the right direction, even if it's just a "Band-aid on a gunshot wound" type of move designed to deal with worst case scenarios requiring immediate attention.

I hope the Israeli government realizes that real and permanent changes need to be made, even if that's a complex, difficult, and time-consuming undertaking. I trust that they will as I cannot imagine that even the most staunch right-winger has a heart so hard as to remain untouched at witnessing a fellow citizen attempt to take his own life in such an agonizing manner due to feelings of economic hopelessness.

Maybe I'm just naive. Or maybe others are too cynical. Time will tell.

I hope the changes come soon ad we don't see any more of this. It's too horrible.

Improvisation and speed. I also would think that the protesters would back away from this. I suspect that these very conversations are taking place among the protesters as we speak. That, and the more organizationally minded protesters have probably set up their own network, searching for at risk individuals. They're going to win, we just don't know how.

I think I posted the first article on this on the first incident and mentioned that this action is not unique to Israel and that nations facing austerity or where those in charge seek to lessen the social safety net cause someone to hurt themselves or kill themselves as protest at govt cuts.

Of course it isn't unique to Israel. I think any system that lacks an effective social safety net is going to fail sooner or later. People can bear a lot of suffering, but there's a limit to how much they'll tolerate. Once the scales tip, it all comes tumbling down. A smart leader won't let things get to that point.
