There is were teenagers in the Ukraine who did the same (posted on facebook or maybe myspace back in the day). Hammer maniac murders they were called or something.

So this is not new.

Attacking the elderly, the homeless and disabled. It's been a problem in Miami, too. And then gloating over it. Still shocks me.

The family then chooses to make excuses for the boys. Too many excuses and not enough discipline. They're sure to get that now.

This is outrageous. These mobs are beating people on the el, in the streets, then bragging about it.

Where's the honor in that?

The other side of the coin is this: poverty and lack of hope are real. I'm not saying this is an excuse.

But, come to a major city and visit some of the poor neighborhoods. Violence is constant. Teenagers don't think they'll live to be 20. Nihilism and anarchy and recording a cowardly act of violence start to make sense in this world of stark and ever-increasing inequality and despair.

There's so much we could do to help but one of our major political parties seems to think people are a) simply evil by virtue of skin tone b) government, which could help if we had the will to pull together and invest in education, in the arts, in truly helping people, is evil and should be drowned in the bathtub.

So, social programs, education, funding for the arts are cut to the bone. Governors are threatening to refuse to expand Medicaid and the GOP wants to cut food stamps.

Meanwhile, from the worst neighborhoods it's only a few short miles to the best. The glittering towers rise above everything, symbols of money, power and the ability to create.

I think it's starting to drive people nuts. We need to help.
