"So far, the intense focus on his Bain time seems to have only hardened Romney’s objection to releasing more returns. He is “not enthusiastic,” he told the National Review on Tuesday, about giving Democrats thousands of more pages to rifle through for material that they can “distort and lie about."

The two best guesses that I have seen is that he had a year or more of zero taxes paid or that he made a lot of money ’shorting' the economy in 2008 to 2009, that is betting that the economy would go down.

I assign a very high likelihood to the 'shorting' scenario; zero taxes on the other hand would be unusual. His advisors would probably have recommended some minimum tax burden just to avoid raising red flags at the IRS. He is a very wealthy man who does not want to share with the public just how that wealth came to be. There are likely individual tax-driven events which would make him look like a greedy locust capitalist, rather than like a 'job creator'.
