Soles on Fire.

Skeptical observers have had a good understanding of the the fire walking trick (and that's all it is) for many years.
It is essential to use low-density coals and to make sure the surface of the individual coals has been mostly converted to ash. Though the coals are very hot, the low density and the insulating effect of the ash combine to ensure that relatively little heat is actually transferred to the walker's feet during the very brief period of contact during each step. It also helps if the walker's feet are damp. In woo-woo events, this is usually done by having the marks, er, spiritual graduates, walk through wet grass on the way to the pit.

I didn't know that. I figured there was some sort of trick to it.
What struck me when I read this story earlier today were the 20 other idiots who walked on hot coals after the first one started screaming from the burns.

At the moment, someone on Freep is clearly ripping from this thread.

That's me. I still post there once in a while if I can impart something useful, a very cautious dose of scientific skepticism in this case.

Ah. Then most of it was your contribution to start with. We seem to be close to thew Freep position on this one.

Pretty much. It's interesting that they can be so clear headed about this woo-woo but can't recognize the equally kooky charlatans in their own tribe, young Earth creationists or David Barton, for example.

Sorry about stealing the the "soles on fire" quote without asking. It is really the funniest thing I have seen about this unfortunate if wholly predictable event. I didn't think an attribution at freepland would be a good idea though.

At first glance, I thought this article was about Baskin-Robbins trying out some new varieties.

Feel free. Always wanted to show up on Freep in a cootie-proof ensemble.

I'm with you. Sounds like more fun.

What if I show my spiritual growth and maturity by not making fun of them?

Yeah, I know, really hard.

I like the quote from the San Jose fire chief: "We discourage people from walking over hot coals."

The first couple of people I can almost understand. The next 18 or so really defy common sense.

There is a fine line between faith and lack of common sense. I think these people entirely erased that line.

But on a break from day two of the four-day event Friday night, others who walked on the coals said it was nothing short of life-changing.

How do they know that their life is going to be changed on the next day?
