Why should thousands be reduced simply due to some lone nut? Gun bans would not have stopped this, as one the guns was a shotgun often sold for hunting.

The problem is a more effective solution to the problem of lone nuts would need to see privacy reduced to enable the government to check on people who are reported as being at a breaking point. And then you'd need the return of involuntary commitment, in some cases long-term, for those at such a point. That idea, though, would be even less popular since it would be necessity be invasive, and would likely be in some cases abused.

Do you think he would have been able to kill and injure as many people without the assault rifle? I'm not saying it is the cure, but it would help.

a sawed off 870 with a folding stock and this: [Link: www.xrailbyrci.com...] would have been more effective.

Do you think this psycho, or any of the other mass-shooters, just happen to carry all of those weapons on them everyday until they just happen to snap and decide on a whim to empty their weapons at the nearest convenient living targets?

Of course not! Crazy does not necessarily mean stupid. These mass-murders are planned by the killers. If tighter gun laws make it harder for madmen to get guns like the anti-gun nuts hope, all that will accomplish is forcing future aspiring killers to realize that homemade bombs are cheaper anyway.

Oh, wait! Come to think of it, didn't this particular maniac try to lure neighbors into an explosive booby trap? How would tighter gun regulations prevent that?

You can't outsmart crazy.

Psychological science has yet to solve the mystery of why this happens. Until then these mass killings are unpredictable hence unpreventable, politically radical pet theories to the contrary notwithstanding. For now, there really isn't anything we can do about it aside from TSA-style security theater.
