Is it wrong to maybe think inadequate radiation shielding on the Space Shuttles could be responsible for the cancer?

Most likely. The rest of the astronaut corp isn't dropping dead from cancer, and the shuttles have been flying for some time now, not to mention she had less time in space than others....

People who never "slip the surly bonds of Earth" also die of cancer.

I has a sad. I never realized that she was just my age. When she went up in space the first time, I was taking math classes at a local community college just to overcome my "mathophobia". I went on to get a degree in math and a career in IT.
