1 Bob Levin  Wed, Aug 1, 2012 1:59:58am

This was written by Akiva Eldar, who in this case, is taking us on a guided tour of Middle East History. That means that we see what he wants us to see, we don't see what he doesn't want us to see. Beginning here:

This article focuses on the Israeli side of this equation in part because the Palestinian leadership, as far back as 1988, made a strategic decision favoring the two-state solution, presented in the Algiers declaration of the Palestinian National Council.

[my highlights]

So, for Palestinian leadership, peace was a done deal. And we can begin to examine the regional politics with one eye closed. Sewed shut.

This trip is not worth the two bits. Go Labor Party. Rah rah.

re: #1 Bob Levin

No question.

The irrefutable fact is had the Palestinians wanted a peace treaty, there would have been one years ago.

What is interesting to me (and as you note) is how history (and often, reality) is rewritten to serve a particular narrative.

In fact, there are always two Palestinian narratives- one that emphasizes peace and negotiation efforts and another that reject them.

Israel is always placed in the position of having to respond to both- usually at the same time.

It is a no win for them, save for the newest reality most western governments do understand what is going on.

I thought the article sounded very familiar when I started to read it, and that is because National Interest ran the identical garbage by Mr. Eldar only a few weeks ago. (h/t Researchok for finding and posting the article both times: [Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

As I commented then:

Ah, yes, another Israel-bashing article by Akiva Eldar, a man who has never found any fault in the Palestinian leadership's approach -- or, more accurately, its refusal for years to take any approach -- to the conflict or any good faith on the part of Israel's leadership. All one needs to know about the bankruptcy of his so-called analysis can be summed up in the following statement from his own article:

This article focuses on the Israeli side of this equation in part because the Palestinian leadership, as far back as 1988, made a strategic decision favoring the two-state solution, presented in the Algiers declaration of the Palestinian National Council.

There are, literally, thousands of victims, on both the Israeli and Palestinian side of the conflict, who attest to the abject falsehood of that statement.

Any doubts? Perhaps one might re-read the PLO Charter, which to this day has not been amended to remove the provisions which declare Israel's (the "Zionist entity" in the parlance of the document) existence null and void and commit to the destruction of Israel. (See the following for a summary of the history of these provisons and of the PA's failure, despite its commitments and media reports to the contrary, to formally remove them from the Charter: ttp[Link: [Link: www.palestinefacts.org...]...]

Indeed, as Researchok posted only yesterday, such "moderation" remains fully in evidence today:

What’s Arabic for plus ça change? Because that was the message last week from the Palestinian city of Bethlehem, where the “moderate” Fatah party held its first general congress since 1989. Fatah—founded by Yasser Arafat in the 1960s and led since 2004 by Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas—demonstrated that Palestinian national politics remain as mired as ever in conspiracy theories, duplicity and the glorification of terrorists.

In opening the congress, Fatah elder statesman and former chief Palestinian peace negotiator Ahmed Qurei announced “We have in our midst the hero Khaled Abu-Usbah.” Abu-Usbah’s “heroism” derives from a 1978 terrorist attack that killed 37 Israelis. Time magazine (back then able to distinguish terrorists from “militants”) described Abu-Usbah’s mission: “The terrorists hijacked two buses filled with tourists and sightseers, took them on a wild ride down the road toward Tel Aviv, shooting along the way at everyone in sight, and finally destroyed one bus in an orgy of fire and death.”

Lest anyone think the accolades accorded Abu-Usbah were merely a trip down memory lane for Fatah, the party still emphatically claims the right of “resistance”—code for killing Israelis, soldiers and civilians alike. “We stress that we have endorsed the path of peace and negotiations,” said Mr. Abbas to the congress. But “we also reserve our authentic right to legitimate resistance.”

An “Internal Order,” published on Fatah’s website, is clearer: “The armed popular revolution is the only inevitable way to the liberation of Palestine…The struggle will not end until the elimination of the Zionist entity.”

Akiva Eldar has for so long been blinded (at his own doing) to even the possibilty that the Israeli government is not at fault that he has also completely blinded himself to facts or to any sense of obligation to report facts truthfully.
