I've written a bunch about the NYC metro area infrastructure that has to be done ahead of the Panama Canal expansion. Raising the Bayonne Bridge is the most noticeable part - construction is set to start in October and should be done by 2016. The Army Corps of Engineers is also dredging the Kill Van Kull and NY Harbor (an ongoing process, but the new effort is to prepare the channel for the deeper draft ships).

Meanwhile, the Port of Baltimore recently took possession of new container cranes that will be able to handle the larger ships. On the back end, rail lines are expecting more traffic - higher density traffic patterns as 13,000 container ships have to get offloaded in short order as compared with ships that had half that.

Well in the case of Baltimore this is a time I am glad life is not imitating art.

Brazil does not abut the Pacific, so the effects there could be huge.
