1 What, me worry?  Wed, Aug 8, 2012 1:59:13pm
Late last night, Page’s girlfriend, Misty Cook, a 31-year-old nursing student and waitress with whom he once lived, was arrested on gun charges, the Journal Sentinel in Milwaukee reported. Cook was barred under federal law from owning guns due to a 2005 felony conviction for eluding a police officer.

NURSING STUDENT? Would anyone give her a nursing license? A profession where she could potentially hold someone's life in her hands? Stop the world, I want to get the fuck off.

re: #1 What, me worry?

Normally most State Boards will not give a Nursing License to a felon, but it varies from state to state. Some states simply forbid certification of felons while others allow a case by case decision by the Nursing Board. Where the Nursing Board is allowed some discretion it obviously matters a great deal what felony you were convicted of. If it was simply from having marijuana or bouncing a check or two and quite some time has passed then you stand a chance of getting a license. If it was for a more serious charge like child molestation or attempted murder then you can forget it.

Nursing Boards also have the option of granting restricted licenses, just like the DMV does. You may be granted a license but be forbidden to work without direct supervision, to work nights (when less oversight is available), be excluded from holding supervisory functions (charge nurse,etc...), and even be required to submit to scheduled drug testing.

But no, normally the nurse treating you will not be an ex-felon, and in many states it would be impossible (unless they paid a lawyer to have their records expunged after 7-10 years depending on the state).

Yeah, definitely not a comforting thought. Sheesh.

To my understanding, and my wife is an RN, she would not have gotten a license in WI with that conviction. Given the intellectual level in evidence, however, that may not have registered to her and she would really squealed about some silly shit when she was denied a license on graduation. She might have still been able to get an LPN cert, though I'm not sure.

Well that's good to know! It reminds me now of Matt Hale, the white supremacist lawyer who passed the bar, but was denied a license to practice because of his moral character. A few years later, he was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and is currently in prison.

Illinois has produced some shameful characters, but few have been more shameful than Matt Hale. He's a piece of shit who will thankfully not leave prison till he is a very old man.

Don't feel so bad. I live in Florida :)

And sometimes the good guys win.
