Julian Assange Reportedly Claims 'Jewish' Conspiracy Against Him

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange complained about a Jewish smear campaign against WikiLeaks emanating from journalists in Britain, reports the editor of a British magazine on Tuesday.

In a call related by Ian Hislop, editor of the satiric magazine Private Eye (similar to the U.S.' Spy magazine), Assange reportedly bemoaned that the magazine had previously published a piece critical of WikiLeaks beacuse it had been taken in by "a conspiracy led by the Guardian which included journalist David Leigh, editor Alan Rusbridger and John Kampfner from Index on Censorship--all of whom 'are Jewish,'" the Guardian is reporting.

Hislop says that after he questioned Assange, the internet activist backed off on his claims. Hislop writes:

I pointed out that Rusbridger is not actually Jewish, but Assange insisted that he was "sort of Jewish" because he was related to David Leigh (they are brothers-in-law). When I doubted whether his Jewish conspiracy would stand up against the facts, Assange suddenly conceded the point. "Forget the Jewish thing."

Continues.

In all of the fawning adoration bequethed on Assange, his fans forget that there is a victim in Sweden still looking for justice.

From your linked article:

In a statement released via Twitter on Tuesday, Assange denied the claims, saying, "Hislop has distorted, invented or misremembered almost every significant claim and phrase. In particular, 'Jewish conspiracy' is completely false, in spirit and in word. It is serious and upsetting."

Actually 2 claimed Swedish victims - victims of Assange not calling them after they had sex.

So he denies saying something that makes him look bad? I'm convinced.

Gotcha. So we believe what Assange says about himself, but the women who accused him are lying to get him in trouble because you know, he didn't call them back. Do you even hear yourself talk? You sound like every other rape apologist out there, and doing it for the fair-haired boy of the smash-it-all crowd doesn't make it better.

I believe Greenwald's review of the case:

"Perhaps most disturbingly of all, Swedish law permits extreme levels of secrecy in judicial proceedings and oppressive pre-trial conditions, enabling any Swedish-US transactions concerning Assange to be conducted beyond public scrutiny. Ironically, even the US State Department condemned Sweden’s “restrictive conditions for prisoners held in pretrial custody”, including severe restrictions on their communications with the outside world.:

WikiLeaks' Julian Assange believes people are out to smear him and his organization. That much seems clear. Today the New York Times' Ravi Somaiya writes a piece that would seem to confirm those suspicions.

The evidence that the US seeks to prosecute and extradite Assange is substantial.

Oh, really? Lets take a look at that evidence, shall we?

Its pretty much talk about investigating whether the US can prosecute Assange. Greenwald also threw-in some regrettably outrageous comments by public officials who were clearly talking out their asses. (sadly, that is nothing out of the ordinary)

What is notably absent is whether in fact charges against Assange have actually been filed in the US. Given how public the process has been thus far, it would be comically absurd to make this final part secretive.

Julian Assange has sparked intense personal animosity, especially in media circles – a revealing irony, given that he has helped to bring about more transparency and generated more newsworthy scoops than all media outlets combined over the last several years. That animosity often leads media commentators to toss aside their professed beliefs and principles out of an eagerness to see him shamed or punished.

Yeah, you mean like when wikileaks revealed the identities and whereabouts of informants in Afghanistan, and tried to spin that any subsequent harm that should befall them wasn't wikileaks' fault?

Yeah, thats just my stupid political bias pulling wool over my eyes. Thanks for setting me straight Greenwald. /sarc

Woah, whoa... Calm myself. Count to ten. **deep breaths** Phew! I'm getting emotional about this, and I shouldn't. After all, if wikileaks gets someone hurt, they can undo that by just doing lots of good elsewhere and thus compensate for and erasing the bad. Because thats totally how morality works. /crap! I'm still sarc

Sorry. I'm just sick of condescending folks with politically-tinted lenses smugly denying there is any legitimate reason at all to dislike wikileaks. And yes, this is the part where Greenwald just plain lost me.

By all means, talk about the charges against him in Sweden all you want. Talk about the chances that Sweden would extradite him to the US. (for reasons stated earlier, it is still speculation) Talk about whether or not you think he should be extradited and face prosecution in either country and why.

But stop trying to feed me this "everybody's friend, champion of justice, wouldn't hurt a fly," bulls***! He's an internet vigilante, and the collateral damage of his actions include human lives. I'd listen to someone who can't admit both of those simple facts just as soon as I'd listen to a bible-thumping creationist.

Wait, a Jewish conspiracy led by The Guardian? The same Guardian that I'm always hearing people say has an anti-Semitic bias?

Is there a map that goes with this? I'm totally lost... O_o

Assange denies he made such a claim. The reporter who reported this admits he took no notes and he paraphrased.

Get your facts correct. Assange is not charged with anything - not for sexual assault nor rape. He is wanted for QUESTIONING by the police to determine his accusers complaint that Assange and her had consensual sex but he refused her request to put on a condom and or he had morning sex with her while she was still asleep (which is probably why no condom was used).

Assange does not want to be questioned in Sweden if he is not been charged (he is OK with being questioned over the phone) because he feels that Sweden would then act on an extradition request by the US govt after he is in their custody. And once in US custody his rights will be violated (America has black hole jails and tortures prisoners).

re: #22 Destro

If a woman tells you to wear a condom and you refuse but have sex with her anyways, then that can be considered sexual assault, as is having sex with her while she is unconscious (in fact the latter is sometimes outright rape).

Can we have an honest discussion about Assange?

Here are the basic facts:

-Assange is wanted by Swedish prosecutors on a material witness warrant regarding potential sexual misconduct. He hasn’t been charged with any crime.

-He is wanted, by prosecutors, to answer questions regarding his potentially having engaged in surprise sex, refusing to wear a condom after being told to and initiating sex with a sleeping woman.

-The two women claimed to be his victims never actually filed charges against him themselves. One claimed her sole purpose in going to the police was to seek help forcing him to take an STD test and the other went to the police claiming to be “moral support” for the first.

-The two women got in contact with each other and compared stories before talking to the police. Unfortunately this is problematic from any law enforcement point of view.

It's sort of like how Paul Ryan can simultaneously be a right-wing fascist and a complete moderate RINO depending on who you talk to.

Yeah. Having sex with an unconscious woman is in many jurisdictions considered to be...how shall I put this?...rape.

29 SanFranciscoZionist  Fri, Aug 17, 2012 3:53:25pm

Also, stop trying to weasel out of this. You implied, not subtly, that these women were making up the rape charges out of spite because Assange didn't continue seeing them.

That's the most dickish, old-fashioned rape apologist crap in the book.

Yeah. Having sex with an unconscious woman is in many jurisdictions considered to be...how shall I put this?...rape.

She was not unconscious. She was asleep after a previous night of sex. This was not a sleep over pajama party they were having. In any case Assange is not charged with rape - he is wanted for questioning only. Something that could be accomplished over the phone.

re: #29 SanFranciscoZionist

I don't know what their motiviation is but they colluded with each other before they went to the police and reports say one was upset Assange slept with another woman right before.
