I'm going to take a wild guess here and suggest that somebody helped him get what he wanted.

Seemingly so. I once worked with a man who was a quadriplegic. In fact, he was a lawyer who helped develop the ADA - Americans with Disabilities Act. He was injured as a teenager in an auto accident. Because he had no feeling below his neck, he couldn't tell if his body was in pain so was susceptible to problems like bladder infections, chest colds, things that we would normally take care of easily. Gone untreated, they could kill quadriplegics.

Drew Batavia died of complications from a chronic unitary tract infection.

The full article is pretty clear in saying that he really did die of natural causes - the timing so soon after the ruling of his case was merely a coincidence.
After all that has happened, if the police had suspected someone had helped him, they'd have declared a suspicious death and got stuck in with an thorough investigation. But they've effectively cleared the case, and did so publicly.

Yes, that's what I'm thinking, too. After all, he went to the trouble of going to court to ensure that any physician who helped him die would not be prosecuted. It appears that he just refused nutrition and any treatment for the pneumonia as was his right to do.

Heard about this guy's case on the way home from the beach a few nights ago on NPR. Felt terrible for him.
