Shake Up in Zetas’ Leadership Could Affect the Rio Grande Valley
A shake up in the leadership of the Zetas drug cartel could affect Rio Grande Valley residents.
Intelligence experts claim the power struggle could send cartel members north to escape the gunfire.
“Internal rivalries are fairly common,” Fred Burton said. He is the vice-president for Stratfor, a global intelligence agency based in Austin.
“This … could have significant ramifications, depending on how bad the Zetas want to self-destruct,” he said.
“You could have potential spillover of persons traveling into Texas … hunkering down, staying safe utilizing a stash house … inside of Texas, or perhaps seeking medical attention if they’ve been injured,” he said.
The Zetas control most of the drug smuggling routes on the southwest U.S-Mexico border.
