There is a under-the-radar presence of this kind of thought processes in MI-witness the Hutaree and the Michigan Milita.

Is there some Constitutional way to make getting kicked in the ass part of the penalty for this kind of behavior?

Learned Mother of Zion,

I have a hard time believing this. If this really was just a dumb stunt and not a hate crime, we have very good reason to be angry at Zach Tennen. I just have trouble believing that someone would deliberately injure themselves like this, just to get attention from other people. If he really did do this to himself, just to get attention, than he's messed up. What could be so wrong with him?

Learned Mother of Zion,

Also if this wasn't a hate crime, why did those people beat him, or are we to believe he lied about that and he just injured himself on purpose?

I don't believe he deliberately injured himself for attention. What I think happened is that he and his friends were playing around with a staple gun while they were falling-down wasted drunk. An accident happened and rather than admit to the medical professionals what a stupid, drunk jackass he was, he made up a fake hate crime.

"It seemed like a good idea at the time."

Supposedly "20 people stood around and watched this." Well, if that is the case then they will surely come forward to be interviewed by the police and get to the bottom of this.

Here's an update:

East Lansing — Police say a Michigan State University student's Jewish religion doesn't appear to have been a factor in his assault at an off-campus party.

East Lansing police Capt. Jeff Murphy says there's no dispute that Zachary Tennen, a sophomore, was seriously assaulted early Sunday and suffered a broken jaw. But Murphy says witnesses haven't confirmed Tennen's account that he was slugged after revealing he's Jewish.

Murphy said Wednesday that detectives also have no evidence that Tennen's mouth was stapled shut during the attack as he maintains.

The 19-year-old from Franklin is recovering from jaw surgery. Tennen's father, Bruce Tennen, says the conclusions by East Lansing police "sicken us."

An 18-year-old man from Farmington Hills is a suspect, although no arrest has been made.
