There's a good special on H2, On Demand, about Charlie Wilson's war. Not only is there sex and drugs, but you also get a glimpse of the intelligence bureaucracy at work. Keystone Cops.

Everyone in the Charlie Wilson's war should be brought up on charges of aiding and abetting jihadi terrorists.Charlie Wilson's war enebaled al-Qaeda to form.

Yes. Dear God, those poor Russians. You'd think a civilized country could get involved in someone else's civil war without it becoming some kind of quagmire.

//Note: for the slow of listening, this comment is not intended to be an endorsement of Charlie Wilson, the CIA, the mujahideen, al-Quaeda, or the often egregious behavior of the United States at various points during the Cold War. It is merely meant to express exhaustion with a certain sort of nuanceless state of constant and selective outrage.

Yea, Afghanistan would have been better off under Soviet secular rule rather than the influence of those nut jobs in Pakistan.

God, you're a blast from the past. I haven't heard this much shilling for the Soviet Empire since the 1980s.

Are you normally in favor of nations taking up the White Man's Burden and bringing civilization at gunpoint to the savage natives, or is this just special because it's Russia?

re: #6 SanFranciscoZionist

I am arguing for non-interventionism. The USSR would have fallen regardless of what happened in Afghanistan - they were broke. The CIA was telling the president they were broke but the American numb-nuts we had in power refused to accept this reality because they had made the USSR suh a big bogeyman for them.

So the scenario is USSR is in Afghanistan - the jihadis are not being armed by anyone and thus don't really exist - the USSR falls and forces retreat - Afghan regime in power is a reformed socailist secular regime like existed in Eastern Europe after the fall of the iron curtain - Bin Laden has no al-Qaeda base. No 9/11.

Why did you not stay on topic when you mentioned "Charlie Wilson's War"? Did you forget you did that? I commented on your comment meaning I was on topic - you were not.

How Technology Helped Crack the Kansas City Highway Shooter Case
The trick is going to be allowing this technology and regulating it against abuse. by anyone, law officers or commercial enterprise. For almost a month, Kansas Citians lived through what amounted to a horror movie without an ending. According to the narrative described in court documents, it would take cutting-edge and occasionally controversial law enforcement technology, including license-plate readers, to put an end to ...

Russ Campbell’s Blog: Bill C-23, Fair Elections Act Seems Now on Solid Ground
Now that a Senate committee has recommended nine changes to Bill C-23, Fair Elections Act, the legislation seems pretty solid. And, since Pierre Poilievre has, apparently, indicated privately that he's open to changes, an amended version of the bill will likely become law by this summer. We would probably have gotten to this point earlier had not the minister responsible for the bill ...

The boat ran into trouble several dozen miles from Jindo, an island that sticks out of South Korea's southwestern corner like a little toe. Jindo is surrounded by a group of even smaller islands that are slightly farther afield from the mainland. The ferry was curving around those small islands at the time it issued a distress call. What caused the disaster? We ...

Calgary stabbings: How knife crime in Canada can cause ‘moral panic’
What Calgary police chief Rick Hanson called the "worst mass murder" in the city's history didn't end at the barrel of a gun. New York Electoral College: State Joins National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
Ben Mathis-Lilley, Slate: New York Electoral College: State Joins National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
