Obdi. Is their anything we or I can do? There must be something we can do even though we are way over here in America to help them?

Amnesty International Hungary, and Reporters Without Borders are both good to support in reference to this. In terms of aid groups, it's really difficult because the Roma have such an insular culture and distrust (for good reason) outsiders, so there aren't many relief organizations that actually wind up helping them.

What's needed is governmental policy change in Europe, and at the EU. Writing to your congresspeople to get it brought up is worthwhile. So is writing to Obama.

Every single goddam party that campaigns on "law and order" and "family values" is anything but. The rule of law was permanently damaged last year when the Hungarian government instituted a new constitution.

Here's a Krugman column, where he goes down the list of changes, including censorship, the removal of judicial oversights, and the weakening of independent human rights agencies.

Reports of attacks on the Roma have also been filtering out of Italy.

Watching the resurgence of fascism in Europe is nightmarish.

Pretty much, what the GOP is trying to do here.

When people are allowed to be awful they are, without fail.

What a fucking disgrace. The Roma have had a hard life. Now they have to deal with Nazis 2.0. As if the first time wasn't bad enough.

Europeans *never* act in the face of genocide or the threat of it.

Europe stood by for the Holocaust.

Europe stood by for the slaughter in Bosnia and Serbia.

Europe stood by for Darfur. They went so far as to be certain that the conflict there was never recognized as a genocide in the U.N. because then they would have to have acted by treaty.

Europe will watch this.

Then some time after it explodes, Europe will whine about aggressive Americans in the same breath they whine that they should have done something if they notice at all.

I am sick to death of Europeans.

OMG bigel has killed Ludwig and taken over his LGF identity!

re: #12 Learned Mother of Zion

OMG bigel has killed Ludwig and taken over his LGF identity!

Not at all. Ludwig is just telling it like it is. Confronting a thousand murderous fanatics takes courage, and the local authorities lacked it. As he's said previously, in a case like this you have to fight, even if you know you're going to lose. Because every minute the police could have bought would have been another minute for civilians to get to safety.

Instead sadly, I think far too many in Europe are content to allow the Neo-Nazis to slaughter the Roma, as long as they don't really have to see the butchery. Some will even be glad that the people they don't like are being "disposed of". Sick.

We are in the midst of the worst Washington scandal since Watergate. The reputation of the Obama White House has, among conservatives, gone from sketchy to sinister, and, among liberals, from unsatisfying to dangerous. No one likes what they're seeing. The Justice Department assault on the Associated Press and the ugly politicization of the Internal Revenue Service have left the administration's credibility deeply, ...

4 Things We Should Remember When Arguing About Politics
Political discourse in America has reached levels of douchebaggery previously only theorized about but never observed, like conversational dark matter. We're in a whole new world of hating people based solely on their opinions on a few key issues, and since this is unexplored territory, our conversations about politics are usually only a couple notches beyond the "hold your breath until the other ...

LAPD Reformed as Federal Oversight Lifted, City Leaders Say
Los Angeles leaders say the Los Angeles Police Department has undergone a dramatic transformation since federal oversight of the agency was ordered 12 years ago. The dismissal Wednesday of the so-called consent decree, which arose largely out of the Rampart corruption scandal and addressed basic problems of accountability that stretched back decades, delivered a largely symbolic, but nonetheless important milestone for the LAPD ...
