Sadly, this is not the first war/major strategic blunder based on a failed assessment, and it’s not the domain of the CIA only, history is full of such stories.

One book helped me (albeit in 1988 from a book published in 1968 - think of the opportunities had the leadership of the time had looked at a completely open source assessment of some major problems), helped me “re-see” the Vietnam era: “Our Own Worst Enemy” by William Lederer.

Later I found “A Vietcong Memoir” which confirmed almost every speculation of “Our Own Worst Enemy,” but it was published in 1986, by the former VC Minister of Justice, who had joined the Viet Minh in 1954.

When paired, it is a cautionary story for any countries leadership regarding how to assess things differently than just through the lens of emotions and political maneuvering.

One of my professors, Jeff Herf, a noted sociologist make a lasting point on me: You can “what if” the decisions after the fact, but if you look closely, you will find, for their time, they made what seemed like the best decision possible. In our work, that became apparent, as we dug into the history of warfare from the Peloponiesian Wars all the way to the 1986 bombing of Libya….

We can only hope future leaders are far more invested in looking at the details before, pun not really intended: “pulling the trigger.”

All true- but hindsight is 20/20

We live in a very dynamic world and decisions are made in that environment.

No question there were no WMD’s but there was evidence thew WMD capability was put on hold. Recall the lab and production equipment found carefully buried.

Goes back to the study of why societies did what. It was all dynamic at the time they made the decision…and it didn’t help that Saddam said he had them, reported he didn’t destroy them in his report to the UN, and had Generals who had been skimming money from him, claiming they needed it to build all sorts of things to defeat the American attacks and reap other havoc….and couldn’t stand to tell him they had made a front and really embezzled the money. A big can of worms and it all lead to a bad decision, by people who had intelligence, not actual knowledge.

New Method for Producing Clean Hydrogen
Duke University engineers have developed a novel method for producing clean hydrogen, which could prove essential to weaning society off of fossil fuels and their environmental implications. While hydrogen is ubiquitous in the environment, producing and collecting molecular hydrogen for transportation and industrial uses is expensive and complicated. Just as importantly, a byproduct of most current methods of producing hydrogen is carbon monoxide, ...

Pope Francis Says Atheists Who Do Good Are Redeemed, Not Just Catholics
Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists. During his homily at Wednesday Mass in Rome, Francis emphasized the importance of "doing good" as a principle that unites all humanity, and a "culture of encounter" to support peace. Using scripture from the Gospel of Mark, Pope Francis explained how upset Jesus' ...

Holder: We’ve Droned 4 Americans, 3 by Accident.
In an extraordinary admission, Attorney General Eric Holder has told Congress that U.S. drone strikes since 2009 have killed four Americans -- three of whom were "not specifically targeted." For all the effort that the Obama administration has gone to in asserting that its drones only kill the people that the administration intends to kill, Holder wrote in a letter today to Sen. ...

WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Pfeiffer gives the impression that GOP operatives deliberately tried to "smear the president" with false, doctored e-mails. But the reporters involved have indicated they were told by their sources that these were summaries, taken from notes ...
