All these religious concerns of beard lengths, foreskins, hair length, clothing, etc....God sure is a funny character.

Unfortunately, committing home invasion, assault and battery on your neighbors is not funny. This man was the victim of a crime meant to both frighten and shame him.

I think he meant funny peculiar, not funny ha-ha.

Funny as in screw loose.

Isn't the more important aspect of the article that these people are being persecuted on religious grounds?

Ritual humiliation, using an aspect of the person's culture, is despicable. It's despicable when neo-Nazis try to offend Muslims by pouring pigs blood on a mosque steps, it's despicable when Jews are made to spit on the Torah, it's despicable when super-fundie Amish cut off another Amish guy's beard. And it was despicable when Mitt Romney gave a long-haired guy a forced haircut, too.

Also of note is how religion makes people batty were what clothes you wear or body part you get to keep is a life and death issue.

This is a completely unproved assertion. There's lots about religion that's irrational; so is the majority of fashion. Men don't wear dresses, not because it makes any sense for men not to, but just because that's our societal tradition. Especially on stuff like fashion, saying that it's religion making people batty on the subject is really special pleading for your own pet peeve.

It's really, really weird to me that you appear to feel no empathy for the person who was attacked, instead just going "Haha, look at these weirdos".

The victim was attacked for weirdo religious reasons. I did not call the victim a weirdo but I did call the god who orders dress codes and body modifications a weirdo.

Never mind, dude. You really make no attempt to even begin to understand the points other people are making to you. It's doubly frustrating from someone who's supposedly coming from a more enlightened perspective.

re: #10 Obdicut

The people who did this to the victim are caught. Since this is a closed case, what should I comment on? How tragic it was? That is superfluous. Hence I made a comment on the nature of religion and how it fosters this kind of behavior (this is a case of inter-religious conflict).

re: #11 Destro

I understand you don't get it. Do you even at least try, at all, to engage with the point that religion is just another part of culture?

Shit like this elevates religion in an ironically almost superstitious way.

re: #12 Obdicut

I think religion is like the pinky toe on the foot of civilization. We evolved to the point we don't need it any more and if it gets cut off it won't be missed much.

Therefore wry comments about it are out of bounds?

We must remember never to poke fun at the more risible aspects of religion because if we do then we will actually be elevating it in an almost superstitious way. Yeah right.

That is not how evolution works, and it's depressing to hear you talk in that way.

If you mean that human society has evolved to the point we don't need it, we never needed it in the first place. It's just a natural outgrowth of our pattern-matching abilities.

re: #14 Aye Pod

When did I say that being wry is out of bounds? To me, the 'God sure is a funny guy' with comments about clothing seem off to me because, hell, an obsession with what clothing you're allowed to wear would make god more human. He's a hipster, apparently, digs beards.

I don't find wearing beards for religious reasons any more ridiculous than wearing beards because you want to fit into your social group. One and the same, really.

Religion is just another aspect of culture in general.
