I don't understand why anyone would vote for Bush twice and then vote against Romney because of his wealth. Yes, Romney's more of a snob than Bush is but still.

What a conundrum.

Because Dubya had a Midland, TX accent and a ranch. He could pull off the Southernisms easily.

Mitt Romney is the living embodiment of the smarmy asshole CEO who fired you, outsourced your job, and then got a big fat bonus for his efforts.

True that.

Funny that the low information GOP voter thinks that Romney has multiple wives because he is Mormon, just like on "Big Love" or "Sister Wives".

Bush didn't give the impression that he simply didn't know anyone who didn't make several million dollars a year. Romney does. Maybe it's not fair, but it does speak to mastering a critical skill-not coming off as a godawful snob to the American voter.

Well, the theory around here has often been that white Southern voters would vote for Jack the Ripper before the black guy. Apparently that's not universal.

There was the infamous "WE're voting for the n******" comment during the last election.

The version of that I found was set in the mill towns around Pittsburgh. While I find it both believable and a sign of progress from my home culture, Snopes says it's faked.

I'd not be surprised if both were true - there may well be folks that think that way and places where it was faked. I do remember one of my wifes deeply racist southern aunts voted for Jessie Jackson once because he was a Baptist preacher and that made him better than the other lying politicians despite being black.

That's because there's a large evangelical population in the South and they're basically convinced that the Mormons are a cult that aren't "real" Christians and who are barely a half-step above Satanists. They're not going to vote for Mitt for that reason alone.

Couple them with the blue collar conservative types who might have liked Bush but who think Romney is too rich, to snobbish, or too much like the asshole boss they hate, and the GOP isn't automatically guaranteed a solid. Those same folks might not like Obama much, but they'd rather vote for him over Mitt since Mitt is seen as too out of touch.

While I don't think they phrased it in those terms, my white rural Southern in-laws essentially took that stand. (These are the folks...when I described the visit, Reine told me that's what you get for going to Morehouse Parish. But they are Obama voters. Not what you'd call racially up-to-date, though.)

It baffled me at first, but what I realized, talking to them, was that while intermarriage and such may still be taboo, hiring black people to be your mechanic or your doctor or such is seen as meritorious. It shows you're fair-minded and liberal. I think that voting for a black president was seen in the same light. They wouldn't want to live next door, but DC is a respectable distance away, and he seems like he'll do a good job.

I think. I may still misread them.

These all seems like good and real reasons. I'm just pointing out that maybe we got a touch too convinced that the words "Southern Strategy" explained everything.
