The assault force that carried out this attack was setting fires to "flush out their quarry" (I do not like to use hunting metaphors to describe battle, but sometimes they are the best tools for the job.). The fires meant that the diplomats could not effectively find shelter from their attackers, on peril of death from smoke inhalation. Sadly, that part of the attackers plan worked.

But "plan" is the critical word here. This wasn't like other attacks on embassies that we have seen through the years. This was a long-planned assault, one the attackers had practiced. The mob in front of the consulate was just there to allow the assault force and fire support to get close without be recognized as what they were. Someone smart planned this out, and we need to find that someone smart; Preferably in a condition fit for rigorous interrogation.

I asked a question that because it made Obama's policy seem like a failure I got no answer to - but why, when in April there was RPG attack in Benghazi on the British consulate was the American ambassador there with no armed protection when eastern Libya, especially Benghazi is a hot bed for al-Qaeda? Most of the Libyans we captured or killed in Iraq were from this part of Libya. So why the lack of muscle on the ground? Did being wedded to the interventionist mission blind participants to the dangers?

In any case, what I ask is a different subject than what this post is about. It is the tendency of the right wing to see ALL Muslims as “beardos and non-beardos”.

The right kind of reminds me of the gunner scene from "Full Metal Jacket" where the trigger happy Marine is shooting at anything that moves on the ground:

DOORGUNNER: Anyone who runs is a V.C. Anyone who stands still is a well-disciplined V.C.

[slow ominous voice]No, we want him alive. This attack was too much like that one in Mumbai a few years back. If Al Qaeda is now able to train small numbers of real fighting men, then their threat has increased greatly. We must learn more about this threat, and those who planned and executed this attack are the key to that knowledge. We must take some of them alive, and when we do we must be prepared to interrogate them using any means necessary.[/slow ominous voice]

1. I had a bad narcoleptic episode last night and had to go straight to bed without talking about what I'd put in #1. I wanted to say it now and get my insight out into discussion.

2. I can't speak for why the State Department acted as it did. Only they can do that, so I'd just suggest sending the an email.

3. I think Greenfield jumped the gun and wrote what he wanted to be true. How Frontpagemag came to tolerate that sort of thing as a long and ugly story, started by the site having a serious hate for Barack Obama, and ending with it giving space to people whose hatred of Islam is crystal clear.

FrontPageMag is so uncool.

'Beardo' does not refer to a Muslim with a beard, it refers to a pretentious hipster with a beard.

Seriously. Why don't these people consult the Urban Dictionary from time to time? They would have avoided calling themselves 'teabaggers' that way.

I am pretty sure the writer of this came up with beardo insult on the spot to try and explain why the Muslims in the picture did not look like the stereotype Muslim fanatic.
