That is the edgiest thing The Onion has published in years. Kudos.

Ganesha is a hermaphrodite?

I think there's more to edgy than a cartoon cluster of religious figures having an orgy. I get that they think they have some sort of witty point here, but...it's a touch off. Random example: they think Hindu extremists have never murdered anyone?

No, they just think Hindu extremists will leave the U.S. Embassy alone, so who gives a damn? Not attacking us is practically the same as being nonviolent!

If you're killing people for what you believe in you're fucking nuts. True story.

It's in poor taste. Remember 'taste'?

Downding for your subtitle. Christianity has, in the past, slaughtered people for far less than an image like that. So have Hindus, so have Buddhists. Religions are not better than one another. The culture and socities that contain them may be, but the religions themselves are just a subset of that culture, and you'll find the 'good' religions in post-enlightenment societies. It's not the religion. It's whatever the culture has had to moderate and reform the religion.

12 dragonath  Fri, Sep 14, 2012 10:36:03am

I bet if someone showed this to some fundamentalists Christians in Uganda, they would not be amused.

What can you expect, look at his bigoted avatar image.

Outrage! Come on, give me a break. That's the title from The Onion and that's a cartoon from the Onion. I first found out about it from Jeffrey Goldberg. This is place is starting to scare me. Soon you'll be calling for blasphemy laws.

Yeah, Gus, I'm going to call for blasphemy laws. That's a reasonable position to take. For fuck's sake.

This is the subtitle I was talking about:

Some religions are less terrible than others.

Which, you know, was what my whole fucking post was about.

All that is true, but are Christians going bat guano crazy and murdering people TODAY for criticizing Christianity?

Were there murderous and violent riots when Piss Christ was released to public viewing?

The fact that there are still Muslims who murder for the sake of their faith is proof positive of the need for more social evolution within Islam.

There. I said it.

re: #15 Eclectic Infidel

Nope. Because of the Enlightenment, and the values it forced on Christian cultures.

The fact that there are still Muslims who murder for the sake of their faith is proof positive of the need for more social evolution within Islam.

Sure. But Islam isn't monolithic. There are plenty of Muslims alive now who are completely post-Enlightenment in their religious thinking, like most American Muslims.

It is not the religion, it is the culture in which the religion rests. There are still Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist fanatics in the world.

It is not the religion that reforms itself; society reforms the religion. Christianity did not significantly improve until the idea of individual rights was fought for and established.

17 Obdicut  Fri, Sep 14, 2012 10:59:24am

Zero Muslims in the US reacted to the release of this film by rioting-- or even fucking protesting, as far as I know. Probably soon there will be a few insignificant assholes.

So why are people comfortable blaming "Islam"? Clearly, it is not Islam.

Look the onion can post whatever images they please, I like the onion.
I just dont happen to think this image is all that.

So now if we dont particularly care for an image, we are some kind of what?...I dont even know. I think it is a bit crass and opportunistic.

It is an opinion. That is still allowed, no?

re: #20 blueraven

The Onion is pretty much always offending someone. But they're about as unbiased as can be, and they satirize everyone regardless of faith, creed, color, etc. I don't think this was one of their best efforts, but it's the goddamn Onion.

Has 'offending' become a virtue in and of itself? In both Pittsburgh and Alabama they have a common word for people who offend large numbers of people without provocation. We call them 'asshole'.

Hope that didn't offend anyone.

re: #22 Decatur Deb

In The Onion's case, I think they don't at all worry about who they're going to offend, but they really do cleave to the mission of making people laugh.

Their post-9/11 paper was, at the time, very important to me.

Yup. That's the textbook definition of 'asshole'.

Normally love The Onion, don't love any gods, and don't love outrage for the sake of making a weak point. (Looking at you, Sarah Silverman.)

The comics on the edge are always going to step over on occasion. That's the price of being on the edge. But it's much better that we have them, than that we have people afraid of approaching the edge.

I am not so much offended, more that I just dont think it is that funny. It seems forced as if it is trying a bit too hard.
I am no prude and enjoy a good laugh with NSFW comics. I certainly have no issue with them posting the image.
But personally... this one doesnt cut it for me.

Yeah, I don't think it's that great, except for the sighing and rolling their eyes bit, which got a chuckle. But it's a rare miss.

True about Buddhist fanatics. One only needs to recall the fact that Buddhists in Sri Lanka rioted over Akon's music video depicting Buddha surrounded by bikini-clad women a couple of years ago.
