Depressing.

And the regime has deliberately kept the phony Rushdie issue alive.

Very, and judging by the reactions I've been reading since the assassination of the ambassador and subsequent violent protests I would say that the Islamists have been victorious in bamboozling the naive public. Has it dawned on anyone yet that this took place on 9/11? This is all part of a larger strategy and we're watching the dominoes fall little by little as people are hypnotized into being tolerant of this extremism or shifting blame. As an atheist I find these reactions very disturbing and there is no doubt in my mind that we will on day see another 9/11 take place. We must remain vigilant.

Very well said.

I would only add this is about power and not religion.

Control the masses, control the streets and you control the government.

Oh I agree and even said as much last week. It is about power for the clerics and the AQ commanders. When you go lower down the food change then it becomes more religious. It's those leaders that motivate and often trick the protesters into rage.

I'm thinking in the long run, the AQ more than the clerics. The AQ bubbbas bring guns and RPGs to the "discussion"...ergo, they can control who says what when.

Control the money supply and you control the government. Much simpler. But when that is not an option, Plan B as a starter and as you have described opens the door.

Good thinking Batman. ;-)

Don't forget the mortars. When a field commander brings artillery into the equation ... its serious intent.

Bernard Lewis, in one of his few funny moments, observes that the Salman Rushdie case gave most Americans the idea that 'issue a fatwa' was Arabic for 'take out a hit on', a confusion that has never really been cleared up.
