Colorado gun shop owner Rich Wyatt told Fox and Friends that skyrocketing firearm sales are “absolutely” related to concerns that President Obama will win a second term.

According to the FBI, 12 million people have undergone background checks during the first eight months of this year in order to purchase a firearm. That is 4.5 million more than the same period four years ago.

On some level, this makes no sense to me. Wouldn’t the purchase of most importance be ammo?

Oddly, there are some real bargains to be had just now on traditional manual action guns (the kind I like). My local gun shop has a Ruger No. 1 rifle on sale for $699.00 (MSRP about $1200.00). There are similar deals on lever action deer rifles, historical replicas, and low cost single shot weapons.

The reason for this is lack of demand for anything that isn't on the putative ban list, coupled with the dealers' desire to clear space for SBGs (Scary Black Guns) that are selling as fast as they can be brought in the door.

This is all a very interesting, not to mention alarming, sociological and political phenomenon, since literally billions of dollars in potentially dangerous goods are changing hands on little more basis than a conspiracy theory.

To be blunt, this reminds me of the kind of ignorance-driven hysteria and violence we see in the Muslim world, right down to the daily incitement from conspiracist media. The wingnuts haven't resorted to large-scale violence, yet, but there is no doubt at all they think they might have cause to do so. They wouldn't be spending billions on the tools for it if they weren't.

The conspiracy theory behind this is so pervasive, so widely understood in right-wing circles, that it is seldom actually spelled out anymore.

It is this: Liberals and big government types in general seek to ban or inhibit gun ownership in order to reduce resistance to a tyrannical government they plan to institute.
There is usually an implied addendum that this government will exist primarily to rob and loot the white population for the benefit of minorities. The election of a black president is therefore seen as a step in this conspiracy, and as confirmation of the long-running conspiracy claim itself. Whether Obama actually plans to seize guns is therefore actually irrelevant, he is who he is, and that is enough to confirm the right's fears.

Why would you have to assume that? What is the invited inference here? Democrats and independents bought guns before Obama's election, they presumably still do so. The question is not who is buying guns at all, but who is fueling this hysteria-driven increase in gun sales.

If the government gets as tyrannical as the wingnuts fear a couple of more guns won't help. FedGov will just pile on an MLRS volley, follow up with F16s and napalm then have some A10s bounce the rubble.

I don't think the wingnuts have really thought this through. But then they're not big on thought generally.

Sorry, misunderstood you. You are exactly right, too.
I'm not going to advocate that Democrats and liberals arm themselves in self-defense, at least not yet, but it has probably occurred to quite a few people to do so.
The wingnuts especially take it for granted that combat experienced veterans will side with them. They could not be more wrong.

You have to build up your secret weapons cache so that you can join the revolution when Obama invites the blue helmets in to seize all the private guns, impose sharia law, make your son marry a man and force your daughter to have an abortion. They really believe this. The NRA should've made Obama their man of the year in 2008 and again this year, because he has literally done more to promote gun sales than anyone else in history.
