To me Islamophobia is the BS that in the USA and Western Europe Muslims will take over and pass Sharia law and such - which is not even close to reality.

The other issue is how Muslims behave in Muslim countries if that is the right way to say it because in the Muslim world you have nations that are ethnically different from each other and are composed of different sects.

I mean we do say "Christians" to describe the Western world and even if we did Europeans can't wait to kill each other again if given half the chance (see Hungarians and Romanians as one obscure example).

In other words, identifying people by their religion as a basis for judging their collective behavior is assinine.

None of those type of racist comments were in the movie.

The mob is not angry that muslims are being denigrated, but that their god and prophet was insulted by the way he was portrayed.

In fact just the opposite of the article is true.

Prof Dawkins’ in his 2006 book described “the God of the Old Testament” as a “vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser” as well as “misogynist”, “homophobic”, “racist”, “pestilential” and “infanticidal”.

I think that is a better comparison to how the movie depicts Mohammed.

Anyone think that Dawkins is an anti semite? A fascist?

Now that you mention it:

Chief Rabbi Accuses Richard Dawkins of 'Anti-Semitic' Descriptions In 'The God Delusion' At BBC Debate

Britain's Chief Rabbi has accused Professor Richard Dawkins, perhaps the world's most famous atheist, of writing "profoundly anti-Semitic" statements in his bestseller The God Delusion.

Dawkins, an Oxford evolutionary biologist, called the charge "ridiculous" at the BBC's RE:Think festival in Salford on Thursday, telling Lord Jonathan Sacks, in a debate about religion and science, that the piece was "anti-God" not anti-Semitic.

"The beginning of chapter two, which says the God of the Old Testament is the most unpleasant character in all fiction, that's a joke," he said.

"How you can call that anti-Semitic, I don't even begin to understand. I can see why you might be offended by it, I can see why a Christian or a Muslim might be offended by it too - but not anti-Semitic."

Lord Sacks, who represents the largest stream of Orthodox Judaism in the UK, had pinpointed a passage in the book which compares God as portrayed in Jewish scriptures and the Old Testament as a cartoonish villain, a "vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser", who is "jealous", "homophobic and racist", "petty", "pestilential", a “megalomaniac” and a "bully".

Lord Sacks, who will retire as Chief Rabbi next year, said: “There are Christian atheists and Jewish atheists, you read the Bible in a Christian way. Christianity has an adversarial way of reading what it calls the Old Testament – it has to because it says 'we’ve gone one better, we have a New Testament’.

“So you come prejudiced against what you call the Old Testament and that’s why I did not read the opening to chapter two in your book as a joke, I read it as a profoundly anti-Semitic passage.”

“It is anti the Jewish God, Richard.”

I don't know -you have a couple of kooks that go around calling people anti-semites on here at the drop of a hat.

re: #5 Destro

No, you got called that, to the extent that you did, for doing much more than dropping your hat. You got called anti-Israel for your insistence on siding with Israel's enemies despite all reason and justice.

but "anti-Israel" and "anti-semetic" are not the same. I can be "anti-American" and "anti-Canadian" and "anti-Mexico" without hating Americans, Canadians and Mexicans. I am opposed to the policies of those states and the ingrained, institutional discrimination to which they are based on; I wish to see those states drastically changed to the point where they probably would not be recognizable as what they are currently thought of; that does not mean I hate the people who live in those countries.

I did not say anything anti-Israel, I have said things against Israeli policy - especially in the hands of that right wing hack, Romney/GOP ally Netanyahu. And I guess supporting a 2 state solution with the West Bank and Gaza forming the basis of a Palestinian state (and being against Israeli settlers moving into said areas) is now siding with Israel's enemies?

Like I said, to said kooks on here, that is enough to get one labelled by them as anti-semetic.

But I identify wholly with the United States, to the point where I regard hating the USA and hating me as one and the same. To hate a nation, you must hate her culture and society.

Can I hate America's fuck ups like say America's ingrained racism without hating America? Or must I sing Yankee Doodle Dandy while waving the flag at all times?

Yes, you can hate the racism that sometimes still plagues America without hating America. In fact, I hate it too so you will be in good company in hating such filth.

There are some issues and places where it isn't a problem anymore, and other issues and places where it still is.
