Sunlight- and the revelation of real heroes.

Don't really get why this clarification was necessary. They were embassy security. I'd kind of assume that if they were in a position to protect the ambassador, they'd do so. That their job was general security rather than being his specific bodyguards seems pretty moot.

Better to get it out officially rather than it coming out unofficially later followed by "what are they hiding?" trolling and conspiracism. This way the trolls and loons will be less able to latch on to those two brave men.

I don't get what conspiracy could possibly come of this, though. The two guys were general security, not specific security for the ambassador. They did what they could to protect him-- as you'd expect, from guys on a general security detail.

They stepped into action, however, when Stevens became separated from the small security detail normally assigned to protect him when he traveled from the more fortified embassy in Tripoli to Benghazi, the officials said.

Being in Benghazi with light security is what puzzles me. Benghazi is a known extremist strong hold and there was a previous attacks on western representatives there.

The U.S. Consulate in Benghazi was attacked on June 6th when an IED was thrown over the perimeter

Following the June attack there were three other attacks on western diplomatic targets in Benghazi before the deadly assault on the U.S. Consulate

Anyone know what the highest medal for valor is?, That the State Department can give. I think a few may be warranted in this. Then who cares what trolls and loons say.

Amb. Stevens seems to have traveled with limited security in general, as a choice, eating dinner with local officials, attending hospital openings, etc. On the day of the attack he apparently had a five person security team with him, and the consulate had its Libyan security team.

I can understand why he wanted limited but why not have aggressive security for the compounds. I can not stress enoough that Benghazi was far from safe and is an active extremist zone.

Why no overhead drones as a way to keep tabs on the ambassador at a distance? I think I have a hunch why , maybe being proud of aiding the revolution the ambassador and State dept became willfully blind to the nature of some of these rebels? Saw the same bias during other such conflicts like when the establishment called the Kosovo Liberation Army (made up of criminals and extremists) freedom fighters and praised them while they ignored or excused their atrocities after the war ended.

As I recall Stevens was in town for some sort of joint Libyan / Harvard uni event. The buildings attacked were actually more temporary homes / missions, and were never intended to be more than that (it wasn't actually one of our official consulates), and lacked the security features of real consulates & of course the heavily fortified embassy.

Thank you for that. That makes more sense now.
