I don't like shows that exploit children, and I feel that "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" reflects on the nature of America's media culture and those who are media comsumers than with capitalism itself.

Frankly, I wish the show were taken off the air and the family it depicts put on a better diet.

I dislike reality shows in general; they often prey on the real pain and suffering of real people as entertainment.

Also, while we're wincing, there's going to be a US version of Sherlock, with Dr. Watson as a woman. This is wrong, all wrong. First of all, because it will be made in the US, it will involve a lot of impossibly skinny women with fake boobs. Secondly, the writing will be atrocious. Third, the bromance of Watson and Sherlock should not be tampered with.

We should stick to shows like Numbers, Leverage, and the CSI family.

The US version of Sherlock is based on the (socialist) BBC version.

America's media culture is as capitalist (defined here as profit seeking) as one can get.

I have hope for it because Lucy Liu is a pretty good actress. I'm not ready to dismiss it just because Watson is played by a woman.

I'm hesitant because of your first two reasons, though.

The US entertainment industry will destroy it.

We can't help it; we should stick to movies based on comic books and let the BBC do the stuff that requires actual acting and writing.

For TV, yes. The US still produces some good movies at times.

Slow down there. Nothing wrong with comic book based movies. :)

This reminds me of Hawthorne's famous swipe at the Puritans. When they came to power in England, he wrote, they banned bear-baiting - not because it gave pains to the bear, but because it gave pleasure to the spectators. But that IS a valid reason; deriving pleasure from the suffering or degradation of another inevitably coarsens the soul. All those comfortable middle-class urbanites watching Honey Boo Boo are not indulging the better angels of their nature, to put it mildly.

Capitalism (again, defined here as profit seeking) took a network originally labeled "The Learning Channel (TLC)", a channel that was attempting to do for profit what the 'socialist' PBS does and in a few short years went from producing and airing educational and informative shows to exploitation television based around the Jerry Springer concept of entertainment (viewers watch people who are low class low education types or freak shows so they can be mocked for thei viewer's pleasure).

That is the corrosive power of capitalism if left unchecked.
