Violence Against Women —A PERSONAL APPEAL
While attending a women’s luncheon fundraiser for our local Women’s Shelter today, I listened as the Speaker told a story that made me shudder.
A mother living at the Shelter had to return to the shelter after giving birth. She is living a the shelter with a newborn and a toddler.
Now, as a self-proclaimed Bitch, I can’t fathom not having a safe and secure home to bring my baby to. Knowing that there will be a roof over our heads, food to eat, money to pay the utilities AND a home free of violence (physical, mental and verbal) is the MINIMUM I can imagine.
There are women, IN OUR COMMUNITY, who do not have this AND still go to work and somehow remain strong for their children.
WHAT if this was you? Could you keep it together without “entitlements”? This isn’t a situation where the blame game is appropriate. NO woman, NO child deserves to be alone in this situation.
Please remember this story when you hear about how Congress argues over whether “certain people” don’t deserve to be included in the Violence Against Women Act.
We can afford this AND most of the people who are reading this can afford to contribute in addition to their taxes, volunteer or SPREAD THIS MESSAGE.

Congress focuses on Violence Against Women Act:
The Senate appears likely to approve a measure Thursday to reauthorize the 18-year-old Violence Against Women Act, after Republicans decided to largely postpone a battle over some provisions of the sprawling provision dealing with hot-button issues of immigration and new protections for gay men and lesbians.
Republicans have shifted their attention to the House, where a group of Republican women announced Wednesday that they will introduce an alternative version of the legislation.
The strategic shift came against the backdrop of a heated campaign trail battle for the votes of women. Democrats had been hammering Republicans for the objections, citing it as the latest example of GOP hostility to issues important to women.
