I have never voted straight ticket in my life. This year, it is "D"s all the way down.

"Blessings" isn't the word. It's hard to see something as a blessing just because it works out in the long run.

Were the days that the Hebrews spent in bondage in Egypt a blessing? (Leave aside the question of whether that's literally historically accurate.) The upshot was that the people of Israel came out of Egypt more numerous, stronger, and freer than they'd been before.

But it takes a strong stummik to take the long view and dismiss the intervening centuries as a speed bump.

What is much more clear is that slavery was the ruin of the slave-holders. Morally, spiritually, and culturally, it degraded the owners and overseers. And then, it led them into a hopeless and bloody war that brought economic ruin in its wake. (For the lucky ones who survived.) I'm not big on Biblical interpretations, and in sober moments I think that pretty much everything has a naturalistic explanation. But looking over the whole of the story, it's hard to avoid a sense of

Dang, divine justice can be a bitch.

That's not Fugua's only book.

In "God's Law," Fuqua's 2012 book, the candidate wrote that while parents love their children, a process could be set up to allow for the institution of the death penalty for "rebellious children," according to the Arkansas Times. Fuqua, who is anti-abortion, points out that the course of action involved in sentencing a child to death is described in the Bible and would involve judicial approval. While it is unlikely that many parents would seek to have their children killed by the government, Fuqua wrote, such power would serve as a way to stop rebellious children. (From HuffPo).

A slave's chain has two ends.

Ancient Roman law gave the pater familias complete control over his family and household, including the right to have his kids killed. The tale of Abraham and Isaac suggests that child sacrifice was not unheard of among the people of the time.

So, welcome to 2012 BC, home of the Arkansas GOP.

I... I... I... WTF??? Kill your own children? I want to believe that, even for the current to-the-right-of-Genghis-Khan right-wing, this is too much.
