Working in the alarm business here in Tennessee, the stories I could tell about APX/Vivint and companies like it are legion; every year, during the warm-weather months, we have to deal with what are called "summer" companies, of which APX/Vivint and Pinnacle Security (both based in UT) are two of the biggest and most prolific.

They recruit a bunch of college kids, load them in vans, drive them all over the country (they love the South), and drop them off to canvas neighborhood. Already a customer of another alarm company? No matter, because they'll lie their asses off to get a foot in the door by implying that they're either with or are affiliated with your current alarm company. I've even heard of them telling our customers that we've gone or are going out of business (I'd think not!).

This is the message that my company prints on customers' bills every spring the past few years:

Summer Company Scams – Do You Know What to Look Out For?

Warm weather has arrived, bringing with it an annual boost in the number of home break-ins across the country. While interest in home security is at its peak, a handful of Summer Companies – alarm companies who deploy sales teams only during the summer months – go door-to-door and use aggressive and less than ethical sales tactics to get customers to switch alarm systems.

*REDACTED* has already received customer calls reporting Summer Company scams, so we urge you to keep yourself protected by always:

• Asking for an ID badge, business card or literature displaying their company name.
• Asking for their State Alarm License Number. All *REDACTED* employees have required state licenses.

For more tips on protecting yourself from a Summer Company scam or to report a scam, visit *REDACTED* or call *REDACTED*.

Corporate culture starts from the top down; my company is pretty good, but it doesn't surprise me that the summer companies like APX/Vivint (and their owners/corporate leaders) are rotten to the core.

The next week, while Harris—who travels frequently for his job—was away, the salesman dropped by the house twice to chat up Harris’s then-wife, Dana. She put him off, but he was back soon after Harris returned, arriving to formalize the contract and promising to install the APX system that day. But now some sensors would carry a fee (Harris doesn’t remember how much). And when the technicians arrived, they showed an unusual interest in Harris’s 6-year-old daughter, talking to her at length and asking her parents about her. The installation took three hours, preventing Harris from putting her to bed. Dana was frightened enough to take their license-plate numbers.

Good lord, that is all KINDS of messed up!
