Although I'm a relatively new non-believer, there's an old atheist saying that applies here:

Dear Dr. Weldon:

Go fuck yourself.

Hugs and kisses,
Mattand

…To be sure, it’s very hard to be an atheist, especially in the modern world, which may explain why so many atheists apparently have various forms of neuroses – the denial and constant need for suppression of reality simply runs too deep and eventually takes a toll, which logically leads to psychological problems.

Maybe the good doctor would find it difficult, but as someone who was raised from birth without any religion, I can assure him it's easy for most of us.

I would never try to discourage anyone who is religious and finds it enriches their life from holding those beliefs, unless they insisted that I should live by them too.

What is it with people who want to define disagreement with them as a mental illness?

Usually they become right wing talk show hosts.

You know, I'm a flat-out atheist but part of me thinks these people aren't completely wrong. I envy the religious sometimes. They have a certainty and a contentment that someone who doesn't believe in any kind of afterlife has to struggle a lot harder for, at least in my experience.

What this person gets so wrong is the idea that any problems we encounter are the result of suppressing reality. They're a consequence of accepting it.

Yeah, I too feel sorry for the inevitable meltdown of those who deny evolution, claim homosexuality can be "cured" through counseling, and insist America was founded as a theocracy.

Huh? Oh, thats not who you're talking about? Didn't Jesus say something about specks and planks in the eyes of people? I forgot how that parable went.

It's Fox News logic: In their world; other news channels make far, far more errors than they do.
In our world: those other news channels are simply more open to admitting when they've made a mistake.
Similarly, most Talibangelicals seem to believe that they're far too righteous to even consider that they're so imperfect that they might occasionally get depressed or harbor self doubt.
Yet another fine example of why these twits can not be called 'fundamentalists' - if they were, they'd not pretend to be so perfect.
What terrifies me is the sheer volume of psychopaths those communities are breeding. It used to be such a small community with such extreme beliefs, hence they only released a relatively small number of serial killers and child molesters onto the rest of us. But in 10-20 years time, mark my words: America is going to be in a hell of a terrifying situation.

I agree with everything that you say, except for your charitable take on the author of that passive-hate piece. They're not getting anything wrong: it's deliberate dishonesty and a hostile attack on people who value critical thinking and independent thought.

Dr. Weldon,

Trying to diagnose your political opponents as mentally ill is the kind of thing the Soviet Union used to do. It was wrong when liberal psychiatrists did that to Barry Goldwater, and it is wrong when you do it now. It is the tactic of a tyrant who'd rather demonize or lock up his opponent rather than debate them. For shame, sir.

Sincerely,

Dark_Falcon
