Ugly business, but Zimmerman is entitled to a vigorous defense.

A defense, yes, but his social media accounts? His school records? If he got into a fight with another teenage boy, is that going to prove that shooting him was reasonable?

It can show he had been violent in the past. Given that Zimmerman is claiming Martin attacked him, those records could provide evidence that would support his claim. Given that Zimmerman had physical injures suffered during the confrontation, there is enough merit to allow his attorneys to examine Martin's records. If they find anything they think pertinent, they'll still have to go before the judge again to use them at trial.

A fight with another boy by itself would be not much. A thread of violence and ongoing negative behavior would be something else.

My fear is that the victim is being put on trial, and Zimmerman's defense will do so without hesitation.

ZIMMERMAN'S got a history of violence. And he shot a teenager he'd been, by his own admission, following. If Martin punched him, he was well within his rights. Under goddamn Florida law.

Bleah. It punches all my buttons. It used to be routine to drag out a rape victim's sexual history in court.

I understand your concerns and share some of them.

Still, making those records available by no means the judge will allow them into evidence if they are prejudicial or irrelevant to the proceedings.

I suspect Zimmerman's lawyers will be closely scrutinized and challenged by the District Attorney prosecuting the case.

Zimmerman's gonna get off and there's not gonna be a damn thing that we or anyone else is gonna be able to do about it, except for maybe one thing.

My last hope is for the Martin family to be able to do what the Goldman family did to O.J. and get Zimmerman for wrongful death in a civil suit, but even that is fading as the defense gets to mine for anything to use to denigrate Martin in court.

This whole affair stinks to high heaven and has since before Martin wound up on a slab.

I am presently involved in a lawsuit. I went in for an outpatient hernia repair and came out with a fractured ankle. Yeah, bizarro. The defense atty is now doing his best to disembowel, discredit and intimidate me. Its SOP. He's just doing his job and your point is very well taken in light of personal experience where I am the victim and am being attacked for daring to object to having my ankle broken while unconscious.

How in the hell did that happen?

That, is the 64 dollar question. No one knows.

A Wrongful Death suit in a shooting ruled justifiable in Florida is a risky proposition. If Martin's family brought such a case, Zimmerman could argue he was defending himself against Martin's attempt to commit a 'Forcible Felony'. If that defense won over the civil jury, then Zimmerman would be entitled to collect his legal fees and compensation for the time lost fighting the suit from Trayvon Martin's parents.
