I don't get the viciousness of this author. Orwell privately held anti-semitic views, but publicly railed against them-- even dissecting the intellectual problems with his own private views, in his public statements.

So why am I supposed to dislike him for this? He was a man able to overcome his own personal racism, no matter much much felt, and write against his own feelings. That's pretty fucking awesome.

Perhaps the author sees that as "hypocrisy" and is one of those fools who sees all hypocrisy as wrong.

I see it in various ways. Given his date of birth, and class, it would have been rather remarkable for Orwell NOT to be anti-Semite--although there were remarkable men in his generation who managed just fine.

Since I have no vested interest in Orwell's self-awareness or lack thereof, (I don't like the books very much) I'm content to know this as a matter of historical and literary interest. It is, however, I think, important to understand how deeply rooted anti-Semitism is in our own historical and literary culture.

A subject I think there is a lot of denial about, and some of Orwell's soi-disant inheritors aren't as honest about theirs as he was about his.
