trade unions are now as capitalist as any FTSE 100 company. Look at some of the services that unions offer. Unite and Unison advertise tax-minimising services, through a company called TaxRefundCo, as well as home, car and private medical services. There is even a fundraising lottery, which is hugely in advance of anything the Conservative Party offers its members. There are far more unionists who have signed up to private health care – upto 3.5 million, according to the Telegraph – than who go on strike.

I don't think this is a new development. I think this was the case as soon as WWII ended.

Unions have historically been a bulwark against government control, which is something conservatives should appreciate. The obvious example is Solidarity.

Germany has an interesting history with unions, be they Conservative, Catholic, Protestant, Socialist or Communist--- in the 20s, they held off the far-right longer than might have been possible otherwise. It's not much of a surprise that one of the first things the Nazis did was eliminate the independent trade unions.

i think it's more about balance, trade unions have many of the pitfalls and temptations of organizations and governments, as always, pragmatism is best.

You need a check on businesses running over workers and sometimes the govt can not and will not be that check. Unions need to be able to do this.

In Germany they have a more cooperative system by law where govt, management and trade unions have frequent sit downs to discuss mutual goals.

In American we never grew out of our antagonistic relationship between labor and capital.
