Just why is the U.S. backing Al Qaeda in Syria? Ask your neighboring neocon - Republican or Democratic

It is unarguable that the so-called “neo” conservatives are among the most naive people on the planet.
They keep insisting that it is the proper role of the U.S. to liberate the people of the Mideast from “tyrants.”
Then every time that occurs they profess themselves to be shocked that countries with Islamic fundamentalist majorities elect Islamic fundamentalist leaders.
That’s just stupid.
Yet they’re doing it again in Syria.
Here’s a site that lists all the Al Qaeda connections to the Syrian revolution. An excerpt:
While the Western media attempts to portray heavily armed foreign terrorists as “Syria’s civilian opposition,” it has been revealed that entire brigades are led by Libyan terrorists drawn from the ranks of the US State Department (#29), UK Home Office (page 5, .pdf), and UN-listed terror organization, the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG).
There’s more where that came from - lots more.
By the way, the truly weird thing about this is that none of this stuff is controversial. All agree Al Qaeda is deeply involved in the rebellion. Yet both Hillary Clinton and John McCain (see the photo toward the bottom of the piece) are calling for the Al Qaeda side to win.
Is there a realist in the room?
Nope. “realist” is a bad word inside the Beltway.
I kind of wonder if the State Dept careerists have playbooks they break out for such things? Overthrow leftists Muslim regime? Call in Saudi Arabia to work up the Sunnis and import jihadis and money to the revolution. Cause the enemy regime to crumble then place someone who has been living in exile in the west in power (even though he has no street cred with the armed militias) and hope that they steer the newly ‘liberated’ nation away from any sort of anti-western hostile Islamist extremism.
Any blowback will be ignored by the CIA/State Dept’s careerists as it has always been. Part of the acceptable cost of such an enterprise I imagine.
