Yep. Microsoft has unilaterally decided everyone is going to be using a tablet. As many corporations are still using XP, I predict 8 will get push back from major players, who aren't going to buy many thousands of licences, so they don't get nailed with massive declines in productivity.

I'm an early adopter and have had a netbok with 8 for about 6 months now. still ducky, but it's my lightweight tool, so I use it regurlay. Have 8 on a desktop with a Dell 22" touch screen, and that, seemingly cool environment, is a piss poor ergonomic situation, leaning forward to select things, with decent eye relief from the screen.

On top of that, I find you click on a "tile" to get to the desktop, instead of having a desktop. Yes, you can put short cuts all over, but with as many programs as I have, I will have many, many, many screens, where I used to be able to use foldersto organize them.

haven't found a way to set a default to get me on the desktop "tile" on booting.

Sigh.....

Windows 8 sounds like a total fucking nightmare for a corporate environment.

we are going to have to re-install so many native programs it becomes prohibitive to change from xp, wish they had just focused on the startup and shutdown efficiencies they had originally proposed.

They are going to find that there will be resistance, there's room for a new player who wants to create a "Home" computer instead of a personal computer. (Think in terms of the Ray Bradbury short "There will come soft rains")

So what's the upside to Windows 8? Does it run faster? Is it's file system better than NTFS? Did they finally do away with the gawd-awful Registry?

It had better be something spectacular, because visually it's even uglier than Windows Bob.

What is the point of Windows 8 if you don't have a touch screen device? I mean WTF?

one thing i think is important - at least microsoft are innovating, they may not be getting it right - but they arent static.

That may be true, but putting aside the (to me) ugliness of the design and the clunkiness of the interface, I have to wonder how many devices will cease to work until the developers provide updated drivers.

In some cases, depending on the hardware, that time is never; just go buy a new (printer, scanner, whatever) that does have Win 8 drivers.

No thanks.

It has a better task manager, and can handle copying large files, which tends to fail in Windows 7. I already use a 3rd party tool, TerraCopy, to reliably copy files in Windows 7, so I'll probably skip 8.

Thanks for the info. I'll give it a try.

I like it. Further, I think Microsoft was smart to think tablet instead of desktop. Let me run a few reasons, kept short for this instead of a long position paper.

1. Tablets are not the main thing now. With cloud and thin client processes, however, they are the high probability for the future for the majority of users.

2. Supplementing the previous, interactive glasses. See google glasses.

3. For the desktop people, what works brilliantly with W8 is a graphic tablet.

4. XP is 12 years old - an eternity compared to most challengers. It has been pushed well beyond original design to cope with advances in internet and computer capabilities. It can probably keep up for another 2 or 3 years, but it is not a leader. It discourages innovation. A company like Microsoft cannot continue being the company that always steals and incorporates the new ideas into its behemoth.

I think it's a great idea, but because it's leading instead of following it will generate a lot of hate.

Tablets aren't the main thing now, and unless corporate and government all of a sudden found a lot of un-dedicated cash to bring tablets into play in th emany cubicle farms, then....why introduce a system when still most, and that is most places can't use it like it was intended, since....they don't have a need for tablets on every desk. They are small, thus more difficult to read. Don't forget they are also easier to grab and go, when someone wants one for themselves, which is an other aspect of it.

OTOH, putting a choice of defualt mode for "Win 7 Desktop" emulation, or "Touch Device" mode, that could be set to owner/corporate preference...wow...novel idea...give theam a choice, like big fonts of small, stock desktop picture or upload your own.

And...along the lines of free money (yeah, right, in this economy), the lost prouctivity to get everyone using them is a negative work environment from an ROI standpoint. So, given the economic concerns of the vast majority of their user base, how blatantly stupid is it to force a system on them, under these conditions. And just think: Xerox could have made a "home computer" in the early 80s, with a grapical user interface and a pointing device...but (mind you: early 80s doallars) it would have only cost the consumer retail of $20K...so they shelved that plan, because it would not have worked. At least they could understand the world outside of their lab.

Bootom line: As cool as it is, it will be left sitting on the sidelines for some time, like Vista was for horrible security issues.

i think that is very likely

I don't consume, I create. I use Office and tools such as SnagIt, Camtasia and other development tools. This looks disastrous. My Mac is bad enough (probably because I'm a long time PC person) but this is a complete no go. I'm picturing toggling between multiple apps just to insert a graphic into a doc. Ugh.
