Outstanding.

Commerce succeeds where politics have failed.

There is a lesson in there.

War is the ultimate tool of politics. Political leaders look out only for their own side. Politicians are always realistically maneuvering for the next election. They are obsolete as fundamental problem-solvers.

Nice quote.

That's why I believe free trade solves a host of problems.

I agree with the sentiment. Unfortunately, the story of the Palestinian national movement has repeatedly been one of ideology trumping economics. By any objective economic measure, the Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza Strip benefited tremendously in the decades after Israel captured the territories from Jordan and Egypt, and had -- and still largely have -- standards of living higher than those of many others in the Arab world. That, however, has not prevented them from voting the genocidally-inclined Hamas movement into power or of supporting other economically self-defeating gambits over the past several decades. Until that fundamentally changes, managing the status quo is probably the best that can be hoped for.

If I have a hope for peace left, it lies in the essentially mercantile nature of Levantine cultures.

Anyone with foresight can see the possibilities.

The region is a potential economic powerhouse.

The technological side of this development is heartening. I can see it being a big factor in India, in Brazil, in Morocco, in Tanzania.

Somehow, nothing seems to work out in the Middle East. Remember the greenhouses of Gaza.

I actually find the greenhouses somewhat heartening. Gazans wanted those. They would have brought good income. My belief is that Hamas and their minions deliberately trashed them. A lot of their control is maintained by keeping Gaza's economy in shambles.

Good publicity for the Yafa innovators, if it doesn't get them killed.

Free trade-- or underregulated trade-- has also caused the problem this is attempting to ameliorate.
