SD Admiral Removed as Head of Stennis Strike Group

Rear Adm. Charles Gaouette, a San Diego native who has climbed the ranks of the Navy over a long career, was unceremoniously removed as commander of the John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group in recent days. His removal comes while the Stennnis CSG is deployed in the Persian Gulf region.

The Navy did not give a clear explanation for the change, other than to say that questions had arisen about his leadership judgment. He has been sent back to his homebase in Bremerton, Washington, to await the outcome of the investigation.

It is very unusual for the Navy to remove such a high ranking person from his post in the middle of deployment.

President Barack Obama will nominate Army Gen. David Rodriguez to succeed Gen. Carter Ham as commander of U.S. Africa Command and Marine Lt. Gen. John Paxton to succeed Gen. Joseph Dunford as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced Thursday.

Gen. Ham seems now to have decided to retire. He went from enlisted to 4 star.

And already the conspiracy theorists are tying this to Libya. Freaking ghouls.

OK, I admit I don't know much about the Navy...........I only spent 30 years on active duty, and retired about 4 months ago. I'm not sure why folks think this had something to do with Libya or the administration or the President hiding stuff or............................An Admiral could be relieved for any number of reasons up to and including sexual harassment, alcohol related incident(s), misappropriation of government money or equipment, endangering the strike group, physical and/or verbal abuse of subordinates, etc, etc. While a one star Admiral is high up on the food chain, they do not have the juice to decide what missions they will or will not carry out.
