Saw the massive lines for gas first-hand in Paterson NJ. At least 50-75 cars lined up blocking traffic lanes waiting to fill up. An equal number lined up waiting for gas can fill-ups for generators. It was crazy.

And it'll continue until power's restored sufficiently for enough gas stations to get power.

If you own a generator you should have a matching gas can you keep filled by "recycling" the gas/fuel (putting the gas/fuel in your vehicle and refilling the can or use a stabilizer). Now, I understand that some don't have the means to fill up on quick notice. And you should fill your car beforehand. But people do not understand, for some reason, that almost all pumps these days are run by electricity. Saw a story where people were at a city hall in NJ complaining about having no food and water as well. About 24 hours after this mess. Why? I always prepared when in Florida. But then again, I am in Maryland and applied the same plan for winter storms here, with the added caveat of having firewood on hand. I actually brought firewood in the house on Saturday for a storm that was gonna hit Monday. 3 days of preparation. I guess I just don't get why this is hard.

And this is why we need to explore alternative energy sources. There will come a time when this will be a worldwide problem as the oil supply dries up. We've made petroleum so critical to our lives. If we don't start weaning ourselves off it we'll be totally screwed when the reserves run out.

80% of gas stations in NJ are shuttered; 50% in NY affected areas; 15% in CT.

All because of a lack of power. So, those stations that do have power are experiencing long lines - both in terms of cars as well as people lined up to fill their gas cans for running generators.

As power gets restored, the lines will recede as the demand will spread out among the working stations. It's not a shortage of gas but rather a lack of electricity meaning the gas pumps wont work.

But for right now, those stations are going to see long lines.
