This is excellent news. It is a pity we stopped going back in the 70s and now have to get back into practice again before we can go where no man has gone before. But this will still expand human frontiers for the people like Elon Musk to follow into and find a way to make directly profitable and practical.

The thing that strikes me was in the last presidential debate Obama channeled NdGT for his closing comments when he talked about the kinds of jobs America should be pursuing for the future. High tech science and engineering is where he wants us to go. He didn't say anything about how to get there (most politicians just say train teachers, put more computers in the classroom), but perhaps he talked with Dr. Tyson or something.

I can always hope, can't I? I can certainly hope he points to Neal and gets him out front to explain this.

Let's go back to ... 1969?

re: #2 Euesperides invidius

I know, that was much of the criticism of Bush's plan for the moon. However, if we wish to move beyond the moon, we need to make sure we have everything working, as well as work out the bugs. The Saturn V is dead. The tools for its manufacture have been destroyed. We are rebuilding a deep space rocket from scratch.

And the fact is, this is actually going past '69 from what I'm reading. There are some clear Mile stones they are setting down from an Engineering point of view and getting us to an Asteroid and then Mars.

We'll have to wait and see what they reveal. But if we have to go to Point B (moon) in order to get to Point C (Mars), then nobody should be complaining about going to the Moon again.

The Saturn 5 is dead, thats true. But the tooling for it is no more non existent than the tooling we have not made yet for the engine we have not built yet for the rocket that has not been designed let alone built yet...

Saturn 5 works. The shuttle and newer designs have about the same engine from stage 2 of Apollo. They just added throttling and some horsepower.

Starting over darn near from the paint on up is a contractors dream and a pragmatic mans nightmare.

Manned spaceflight = welfare for the military contractors.

Better they conquer space than other nations then I say.

Seriously it's a pretty closed vision of our future if you disallow exploring and inhabiting space. We need to ensure our survival by expanding the ecosystem we inhabit, and if we can't live in space and on other planets then we are destined for doom much sooner than necessary.

Watch: Burning Texas Railroad Bridge Crumples Like Dominoes
This wooden trestle was 103 years old but, hey, we're fired up about business in Texas, thanks to low taxes and minimum regulation. A fire toppled a railroad bridge like it was made of dominoes outside the small town of San Saba, Texas. Members of the Lometa, Texas, volunteer fire department arrived on the scene, but they could only contain the fire and ...

Masturbation ‘At the Root of Culture Wars’ - Boing Boing
. . . and that is why he is so sure of the 'miracle of the emaculate conception'". The Atlantic's Hugo Schwyzer has a theory: that masturbation, as the most common sex act, is the heart of modernity's war between Christianity and secularism. Many progressives were bewildered by Antonin Scalia's blistering 2003 dissent in Lawrence v Texas, in which he warned that state laws ...

While remodeling his newly purchased home in Elbow Lake, Minn., David Gonzalez noticed something unusual amid the old newspapers that had been used as wall insulation. It was a copy of Action Comics No. 1 from 1938, the very first comic to feature the granddaddy of all superheroes, Superman. My Response to Todays Speech-Standing O
Only the best of leaders dare to reduce the powers of their office or government. I applaud the effort in the strongest terms. Please support these changes with your own Congressman or Senator. While Obama would not declare an end to the war on terrorism, Obama offered to work with Congress to constrain some of his own authorities for waging it, reflecting what he ...

Knights Templar Drug Cartel Burns Michoacan, Western State in Mexico
LA RUANA, Mexico -- The farm state of Michoacan is burning. A drug cartel that takes its name from an ancient monastic order has set fire to lumber yards, packing plants and passenger buses in a medieval-like reign of terror. The Knights Templar cartel is extorting protection payments from cattlemen, lime growers and businesses such as butchers, prompting some communities to fight back, ...

New Method for Producing Clean Hydrogen
Duke University engineers have developed a novel method for producing clean hydrogen, which could prove essential to weaning society off of fossil fuels and their environmental implications. While hydrogen is ubiquitous in the environment, producing and collecting molecular hydrogen for transportation and industrial uses is expensive and complicated. Just as importantly, a byproduct of most current methods of producing hydrogen is carbon monoxide, ...

Pope Francis Says Atheists Who Do Good Are Redeemed, Not Just Catholics
Pope Francis rocked some religious and atheist minds today when he declared that everyone was redeemed through Jesus, including atheists. During his homily at Wednesday Mass in Rome, Francis emphasized the importance of "doing good" as a principle that unites all humanity, and a "culture of encounter" to support peace. Using scripture from the Gospel of Mark, Pope Francis explained how upset Jesus' ...
