I think that gerrymandering beats out even super PACs in the "threats to our democracy" race. But this really is a both-sides-do-it phenomenon. Some of the worst gerrymanders in the country are in Illinois: see [Link: www.tnr.com...] California just redid its map to get rid of some of its more egregious gerrymanders and I wish that other states had the guts to do the same.

Gerrymandering has, in this case, swept out even more of the Blue Dog Coalition. If anyone ever wondered why politics are becoming more partisan, there's your answer.

I'd like to see non-partisan districts like the ones that were passed by referendum in California.

Big shoutout for calling attention to the egregious gerrymandering in my state. I'm all for Dragonath's proposal for better districting.

But one thing to point out about that review by Thinkprogress is that it misses a key point. The US, like other Anglosphere nations, does not elect its legislature by a single national vote. We elect by districts (for the House) or by States (for the Senate). So it is entirely possible that more people could vote for the Democrats and the Republicans still legitimately win, given how our system is set up. But there does remain the issue of gerrymandering, and it was also egregious in places like Texas.

Bloomberg Plans a $50 Million Challenge to the N.R.A.
Michael R. Bloomberg, making his first major political investment since leaving office, plans to spend $50 million this year building a nationwide grass-roots network to motivate voters who feel strongly about curbing gun violence, an organization he hopes can eventually outmuscle the National Rifle Association. Mr. Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, said gun control advocates need to learn from the N.R.A. ...

FCC’s Rules for Spectrum Auction May Level Playing Field for Small Carriers
On Monday evening, Re/code wrote about the complicated set of rules that the FCC's wireless bureau is hoping will be adopted for the TV spectrum auction that will take place in 2015. According to these restrictions, carriers with lots of spectrum like AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint could be prohibited from bidding on up to one-third of the auctioned-off spectrum in a given area, ...

The Insane History of Rockets at Jet Propulsion Laboratories
The Rocket Boys In the late 1930s, a group of Caltech graduate students were booted off campus after blowing up (part of!) their building during a rocket test gone awry. Unwilling to give up on the joy of semi-controlled explosions, the students and a few of their friends headed into the San Gabriel Mountains. They picked a deserted gully -- Arroyo Seco -- ...

Women on Front of Bundy Standoff - the Latest From the Front
But the scene above took place four years before Monica, in 1994, long before Clinton handed his enemies a scandal on a platter that seemingly made such references acceptable. It was not at a Republican caucus or Christian Coalition meeting, but at a gathering of right-wing "Patriots" who had come to hear about forming militias and common-law courts and defending their gun rights ...

Russ Campbell’s Blog: Military Threat Is Essential to Effective Diplomacy
President Theodore Roosevelt famously said: "speak softly, and carry a big stick." His idea was to negotiate peacefully, but with the ever-present threat of the "big stick," military action. Perhaps in this proverb lies is a valuable lesson for leaders of the Western democracies, and especially for President Obama. North Carolina Appeals Coal Ash Ruling
There's a lot of very weird stuff going on in the newly insane state of North Carolina. The state has a problem with coal ash, and with its groundwater, and with the reluctance of Duke Energy to clean up, among other things, the 39,000 fking pounds of the gunk that it spilled into the Dan River in February. The state's Environmental Management Commission ...

 Frank says:

Well, you know I've been here many times, and only certain hours of the day when I'm here am I asleep; the rest of the time I'm actually awake. -- I have a filler on a dat with zappa being interrogated by a couple of swedish fans/state officers(who knows)...in which they are arguing over the pornographic contents of his work. he tells them he has been spying on them, and claims that their porno industry is bigger than that of the US. it's pretty funny. btw-this is from thew '88 tour.
