Can the GOP purge itself of the racists that make up a large percentage of its base? It won't win the presidency again until it broadens its base to include minorities.

Sorry, but when the chips were down and David Frum had a chance to make a real statement and put his vote where his mouth is, he fell right in line and voted for the Republican Party. As far as I'm concerned, his criticisms are worthless -- because he doesn't have the guts to take a real stand. He makes money by writing columns like these, but he's not being honest.

re: #2 Charles Johnson

What might be worth pondering is if Republicans will take this article at all seriously, or just dismiss it as his critics do. I get it, the last thing the Democrats need is a sharp smart and pro active modernist GOP. That would present a real electoral and policy challenge. They need the GOP to stay crazy and finally go so far the Democratic party can dominate the national scene like it already does California. Super majority dominance.

But that lacks check and balance. The nation is best served by a smart loyal opposition.

In 1962, the government regulated the price and route of every airplane, every freight train, every truck and every merchant ship in the United States. The government regulated the price of natural gas. It regulated the interest on every checking account and the commission on every purchase or sale of stock. Owning a gold bar was a serious crime that could be prosecuted under the Trading with the Enemy Act. The top rate of income tax was 91%.

All this is true. Someone on the right has to tell me why the above did not hamper economic growth and prosperity in the 60s? Why has the deregulated era under performed the economy of the over regulated era, especially in the are of economic social mobility?

There is one answer I can think of, manufacturing, but then one has to ask, why the deregulated era allowed the killing of this golden goose?

PS: It seems someone at CNN's comment section has the same train of thought:

Frum is right, we're technically "freer" (or rather, multinational corporations are), but it's also interesting to note that the American economy and standard of living was substantially better back in 1962 than it is now. More federal regulations and a higher tax rate may not be good for the wealthy's bottom line, but for the middle class it's great.

Was just reading this article and figured it had already been posted here. This is the part I liked and while I agree with Charles' assessment, it is true that some conservatives do read David Frum and hence read the following:

O'Reilly's analysis is echoed across the conservative blogosphere. The (non-white) takers now outnumber the (white) makers. They will use their majority to pillage the makers and redistribute to the takers. In the process, they will destroy the sources of the country's wealth and end the American experiment forever.
...
Happily, the view is wrong, and in every respect.
America is not a society divided between "makers" and "takers." Instead, almost all of us proceed through a life cycle where we sometimes make and sometimes take as we pass from schooling to employment to retirement.

The line between "making" and "taking" is not a racial line. The biggest government program we have, Medicare, benefits a population that is 85% white.
