Perhaps teachers ought to focus on teaching.

Just a thought.

These kids are most likely telling the truth. I retired from teaching in GA in 2009, and I vividly recall the atmosphere in the school and the things some of the teachers said after BO won the presidential election in 2008. Teachers I thought I'd had a decent relationship with showed obvious disdain toward myself and the other black teachers and any white teacher who had voted for BO. My own co-teacher took a couple days off after the election. Now, these are people who walked around and talked about how Christian they were. BO's election brought out the real ugliness that resides within them. Some of the black students confided in me that one teacher, who also claimed to be a youth minister, had made his displeasure about BO winning the election known by making disparaging comments about him in front of the entire class. Except for a few white employees who voted for BO, the others behaved as if the world had come to an end, even the lunchroom ladies. When the president made his yearly address to the nation's students in 2009, the students were not allowed to view the video because parents acted like jackasses and started screaming about "indoctrination."

If the stories are accurate she's an idiot, and her union should defend her to the best of their ability in any disciplinary action. That's what they're supposed to do.

I'm actually a bit surprised over this story.

The school in question is located in (or very near) to Lafayette, which is square in the middle of Acadiana (aka Cajun country). The folks there tend to be a LOT more laid-back politically than the majority of the deep South, and is probably one of the most ethnically-diverse regions in the United States.

If it had taken place in the northern half of the state, it would have been no shock whatsoever to me, since I grew up in that area. I actually had a high school teacher (a CIVICS teacher, to boot) flat out state that the two worst things that the United States ever did was emancipation and granting women the right to vote. This was the late 1970s - years after the enactment of the Civil and Voting Rights Acts.

Texas Pastor: Donate to Fix My Helicopter and Get a New Car From God

Douglas Rushkoff on Present Shock: When Everything Happens Now
The always-on, simultaneous society in which we have found ourselves has altered our relationship to culture, media, news, politics, economics, and power. We are living in a digital temporal landscape, but instead of exploiting its asynchronous biases, we are misguidedly attempting to extend the time-is-money agenda of the Industrial Age into the current era. The result is a disorienting and dehumanizing mess, where the ...

An Open Letter From UniteWomen.org to Serena Williams
While my anger and disbelief did not subside, I soon moved to sadness. Do you live in such a protected bubble that you would blame the victim of rape and excuse the perpetrators? The GOP’s Steve King Problem
Earlier this year, the Republican National Committee released a 100-page report detailing how the GOP needed to retrofit its agenda and soften its tone. But if Republican officials had wanted to save time, they could have issued a shorthand summary that read: Be less like Steve King. The Iowa congressman's outspoken conservatism embodies the kind of politics that, in the RNC's own words, alienates ...

Jack Shafer: Snowden vs the Dragons
Reuters: But even the press in aggregate is not a friend to whistle-blowers, as its recent treatment of Snowden attests, what with the deep dives into his teen years (including photos), his education and employment history, his reputation as a loner and a “brainiac,” his pants-down hijinks, his online scribblings, his dancer girlfriend, his predilection for (in his own words) “post-coital Krispy Kremes.” Squeezing ...

I think (Abbey Road is) the best engineered, best mastered rock and roll album ever produced...except that I take exception to stereo placement. -- From "Frank Zappa talks about Faves, Raves, and composers in their g raves" - some English publication, I think. (2 & 3 from the book, "The Lives and Times of Frank Zappa and the Mothers", some Brit thing again (got it at Blue Meanie Imports in San Diego fifteen years ago.)
